Meet past lighting designers

Added: 02/10/2006

Past lighting designers are the people considered to be the outstanding resource for innovative, economically valuable and practical lighting solutions. All the lighting designers should understand the role of lighting in both interior and architecture design and, therefore, rely on their experience, skills and knowledge of lighting equipment and various systems for enhancing and strengthening the entire design.

Past lightning designers should have creativity and the so-called design sensitivity in lightning solutions at the same time. It's a common knowledge that professional past lighting designers had to meet the needs of people who use the certain space. All the lighting designers are supposed to select cost-effective and energy-efficient products, which are most appropriate for the certain event. On the whole, it's clear that past lighting designers created innovative lighting solutions and achieved the perfect balance of aesthetics and function.

All the lighting designers (not depending on the time) solve unique lighting challenges of the wide range of exterior and interior environments, strengthen and enhance any space through creative and at the same time functional lighting plans.

Past lighting designers (as well as modern ones) used to work as a part of entire design team and charge fees for the services rendered. Professional lighting designers are supposed to bring so-called technical acumen and sensitive design techniques to both landscape and architectural projects. However, be aware that the value-added services provided by past lighting designers could either make or break the project success and therefore raise their fees.

Among the most notable past lighting designers were Stanley McCandless, Jean Rosenthal and Patrick Woodroffe. The latter one was the lighting designer whose work encompassed the worlds of dance, music, architecture and art on the whole. To say the least his roster of clients was diverse and included among many artists and various organizations such giants as The Los Angeles Philarmonic Orchestra, ABBA, Pepsi Cola Cirque de Soleil, Yo! Sushi, President Vaclav Havel, Bob Dylan, Michael Flatly, Elton John, Rolling Stones, Millennium Dome, Vanity Fair, etc.

However, the pioneer of the theatrical lighting design is considered to be Jean Rosenthal who was born on the 16th of March, 1912 in New York City. It's worthy admitting that in the early 20th century the job of lighting designers was not yet formalized. As a matter of fact, the set designer or even electrician used to handle the lighting of productions. But thanks to Jean (and her career course) lighting designers became integral and crucial members of the whole production team.

It's necessary to know that she was one of the most in-demand past lighting designers in her days. Her career began with the introduction to Martha Graham (a theatre owner). Later Jean became her technical assistant. By the way this was only the beginning of Jean's life-long collaboration with Martha Graham. She graduated from the Yale University under Stanley McCandless. In 1933 she moved to New York and in 1953 - joined the Federal Theatre Project.

In conclusion it's impossible not to mention that Jean's most considerable contributions into the world lighting design were the elimination of shadows by controlling mass illumination and using floods of upstage lighting to create certain contrasts without shadows.
