Although the actual history of postcards and greeting cards in not that long, the technology of their production became very developed. The first post cards were pretty simple and writing was only allowed on the front side of the greeting card. Because of that, this era of postcards is now called the "Undivided Back Era".
Modern postcards production started with the so-called "White Border Era". During this period (1916-1930), the American post card industry received a great impulse of development while in Europe, postcards publishing was experiencing a slight slow down.
Another great step in post and greeting cards production was made in 1930 when publishers started to use linen type paper. Such paper allowed them to have much brighter colors and make greeting cards more attractive.
Probably the last Era in production of greeting cards is called the "Photochrome Era" (it started in 1930 and continues till modern days). This technology allowed the best reproductions. That is why early examples of Photochrome Era greeting cards are so valuable among greeting cards collectors.
Collecting of post cards is one of the most popular hobbies in the world - there is a huge number of collectors. But the number and variety of available postcards is also huge. So many collectors are oriented only on specific types of post cards.
The major types of post cards that are now being collected are "Historical Cards", "Art Cards", "Photographic Cards," and, of course - "Greeting Cards".
All the "Historical" post cards are printed to mention different historical events. This type of post cards is very interesting. You can not only have beautiful card but also follow the history events.
"Art" cards in most cases represent the antique sector of postcards. And this is one of the most valuable types of cards. The price of Art cards grows very fast and these cards are very popular among collectors. Any post card collector would want to have such a rare thing as an Art card in his/her collection.
Greeting cards are probably the basic type of cards these days. Greeting cards collections are numerous, but as long as the number of greeting cards is constantly increasing you can easily compose your own collection. Of course there are pretty rare greeting cards collections but that is not the main thing here - there are also many different greeting cards collections which consist of modern cards, but still they are very beautiful and interesting.
