Skin Cancer Types - Diagnosis, Stages and Treatment

Added: 02/16/2006

Most skin cancer is brought on by simply too much sun. If you knew that now would you have allowed yourself to bakes endlessly in the afternoon heat? Skin cancer is a collective name of all malignant skin epithelioma. Skin cancer is one of the most frequent oncological diseases that appear at half of the people, reached 70 years old. Usually it includes all skin cancer types, cell carcinomas and melanomas are the most known ones. Skin cancer mortality has increased last years. Development race corresponds to general malignant tumors mortality.

There are three consistent patterns that explain different frequency of skin cancer on varied territories:

- Skin tumors usually appears at habitants of south areas

- Cancer appears at people with white skin. Black people have cancer in 6-10 times less frequent than white.

- Cancer probability is higher at people working on open air

Skin cancer includes some skin cancer types:

- Basalioma (basal-cell carcinoma or cancer, originated from basal cells of skin epithelium)

- Cell carcinoma

- Melanoma

Considering all melanoma characters, skin cancer is supposed to be non-melanoma cancer. Among cell carcinomas, basalioma is mostly met. Almost 75 % of all skin cancer types are basalioma. It may develop from epidermis or glandular skin cells. Basalioma is usually located on the face, characterized with patch of intensive pink color. It also has scales.

Basalioma is divided into such skin cancer types: adenoidal, hyalined, dermal, cystic, pigment, cancellated, trabecular, node-ulcered, etc. The last one is the most widespread. It looks like waxy bulbaceous neoplasm. With its growth, node becomes bigger and elevates above the skin, then recession or ulceration appears. Pigmentary form has discoloration similar to malignant melanoma (black-blue or black-brown).

Cell carcinomas develop from cells located above basal epithelium layer. Cell carcinomas are met rarely than basalioma. It includes several skin cancer types:

- Bowen's disease (red scaled patch, restricted from surrounding tissues)

- Keri's disease (bright red patch without scales on head of penis)

- Invasive cell carcinoma - the most dangerous skin cancer type. It comes out with papules without well-defined edges on genitals with ability to easy traumatism

- Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous malignant tumor. Here is some malignant melanoma information. Malignant melanoma has high capability for metastasis. In cases of metastasis distribution, prognosis is very unfavorable.

To predisposed factors refer people with fair skin and sun-spots, long-run isolation; cases of malignant melanoma in the family.

Here are melanoma skin cancer types:

1. Surface extended melanoma- the most frequent melanoma types, begins from primary radial growth, preceding the invasion.

2. Limited precancerous melanoma is a very long-term phase of radial growth. Malignant invasion is a predecessor of a disease.

3. Extremity lentiginosis (Acral lentiginous) is the most widespread form at black people, located mostly on feet, mycoses, nail beds; disease is similar to pre-cancerous melanoma, but has more aggressive current.

4. Nodular melanoma has usually bad prognosis because of invasive growth.

Clinical manifestation of malignant melanoma is usually pigmented spots of mostly red, white or blue color with brown or black additions. Particular attention should be paid to pigmented affections of skin with 6 mm or more in diameter, asymmetric form, and irregular surface.

The most optimistic prognosis has thin focus of affection without metastasis distribution. If there are characters of metastasis, the prognosis will be worse.

Early identification and movement is the best treatment. If the tumor have metastases, chemotherapy or immunotherapy will be necessary.
