Peculiarities of sex reassignment surgeries types

Added: 01/26/2006

Two common sex reassignment surgeries types are male-to-female and female-to-male surgery. They have become well-known since World War II. Frankly speaking, there`s much more to be taken into consideration than the surgery itself. The article will not only give the description of sex reassignment phenomenon and types, but also its social, personal and legal ramifications.

Sex reassignment surgeries types have become possible since the rapid advances in the knowledge of plastic surgery techniques and sex hormones following World War II. So, it became possible to contemplate complete surgical and medical solutions for transsexuals. As a matter of fact, in the 1950s many transsexual women benefited from new available female sex hormones enabling them to have breast development and softer skin. With time, the mentioned female sex hormones provided transsexual women with female body contours. At the same time, in the mid-1950s plastic surgeons started to think about sex reassignment surgeries types and began to perform different exploratory surgeries for constructing vaginas in male-to-female transsexuals. During such procedures the surgeons used skin grafts taken from the buttocks or thighs. Thus, nowadays sex reassignment surgeries types include the surgical procedures performed for changing the person`s physical appearance and existing sexual characteristics. By the way, they are considered to be one of the treatment parts for gender identity disorder in both transgender and transsexual people. It goes without saying that the meaning of sex reassignment surgeries types differ for transsexual men and transsexual women. So, transwomen undergo the sex reassignment surgery called male-to-female surgery. It involves the entire reconstruction of male genitals. As for transmen female-to-male surgery may involve a range of surgeries which are likely to remove female breasts, shaping male contoured chest and, no doubt, the entire reconstruction of genitals. As a matter of fact, a chest surgery sometimes appears to be the only procedure transmen undergo. It`s a common knowledge that technically no one can truly change his or her sex. The idea of sex reassignment surgeries introduction was altering the physical appearance of the person`s anatomical structure to approximate the anatomy of other sex (as close as possible). Part of sex reassignment surgeries is known to involve extended hormone therapy (primarily, excessive estrogen therapy) for altering various secondary sexual characteristics and distinguishing features. For example, in male-to-female transsexuals such therapy contributes to the growth of breasts and the build-up of fat in certain human body areas. As for female-to-male transsexuals the mentioned hormone therapy lowers the voice and at the same time causes beard and body hair to grow. Be aware that it`s impossible to change male-to-female transsexual`s voice by taking estrogen. According to the popular belief, a penis is amputated during one of the sex reassignment surgeries types (male-to-female one). However, it`s not true. The internal penile tissue is being removed, nevertheless the outer penis skin is left attached and then inserted inside out to the human body forming a new vagina. Of course, the testicles are removed, but at the same time the scrotal tissue is left attached for the further fashioning labia or vagina lips. So, a lot of ink has been spilt over sex reassignment surgeries types. However, much should be and will be told in future as well.
