Glamour photography is photographing models in a way which is close to erotic. The meaning of the term "glamour" changed in the course of time. Now most of practitioners consider that glamour photography to be non-pornographic until it does not depict the sex acts. There are two opposite tendencies today that concern glamour photography. One of them tends to be more revealing while the other one is milder.
Glamour photography is a kind of photography when the models are photographed in a way close to erotic. As usual it is female, either nude or semi-nude, photographing. The term "glamour" has transformed in the course of years. For example, in the 1940s glamour was defined as clothed "pin-up" photos. At that time the celebrities were pictured in swimsuits. Partial nudity appeared in the early 1960s when Peter Gowland, one of the most famous glamour phographers of those times, produced different glamour images. The admirers and practitioners of nude glamour photography claimed it to be non-pornographic until it does not depicts sex acts. Those who disapprove of nude or semi-nude pictures can consider it to be pornographic. Traditionally the pictures of nude or semi-nude models appear in the so-called "soft core" magazines for adults. They are also called girlie magazines. Playboy, the Sun and Page 3 Girls are the examples of these magazines.
Glamour photography is also revealed in different lad magazines, such as FHM and Maxim. But the glamour photography in these magazines is less revealing because the models and celebrities who are depicted in them refuse to pose nude. There is a whole system of terms which describe the levels of glamour photography explicitness. The first level is called glamour. It presupposes that the model wears a swimsuit or lingerie; men wear briefs. The second level is called topless when the girl exposes her breast. The next level is called artistic nude. It represents the whole body of the model, except for the genitalia. Magazine nude is the name of the next level, when genitalia are demonstrated. And the last level is called either "Continental" or "American". It is hardcore pornography.
Recently two directions appeared. The "top shelf" magazines have moved to the hardcore pornography in order to have an opportunity to compete with the Internet pornography which is easily available. The second direction is quite opposite. It is taken by such magazines as FHM, Loaded and Maxim. They represent tamer material, often swimsuit or lingerie depiction of celebrities. Speaking about the most well-known glamour phographers, it is possible to call the following: Akira Gomi, Beverley Goodway, Guido Argentini, Mizuno, J. Stephen Hicks, Shaun McManus, Austin Legrew, Harrison Marks, Marco Glaviano, Herb Ritts and Suze Randall.
Today there are a number of schools of photography which which offer studies of the art of glamour photography. There are also some books that can give you helpful information on photography. They can help to gain confidence and ability to get beautiful images. They are usually accompanied by the advice both for the models and for the photographers. There are online versions of the books. They can teach you how to make successful shots without spending a lot of costs on the fully equipped studio. The glamour courses are provided both for film and digital cameras. The books tell about the most frequent mistakes of the photographers and of the models, the ways how to escape them and how to progress in the art.
