Checking for the possible problem that causes infertility there is a need to get semen description. That is why there are special procedures of sperm analysis. Usual semen description includes many different parameters that may affect fertility. The main of these parameters are volume, sperm count, sperm mobility, liquefaction time, pH and many others. And each of these parameters is very important for correct semen description and may be crucial in determining of infertility cause.
Volume is a basic parameter of semen description as it shows the actual amount of semen which is present in a single ejaculation. The differences in this parameter may show problems in spermogenesis and also different sorts of problems with canal.
Two other important parameters in semen description are sperm count and sperm mobility. They show the number of sperm in one ejaculation and percentage of sperm that moves forward normally (that parameter can be sometimes measured in another way - as the number of sperm that can move forward normally is in a certain amount of semen - in that case parameter is called motile density). The measurement of these parameters can affect the actual choice of possible methods and techniques of infertility treatment.
What is also important for the proper semen description is so-called sperm morphology which shows the percentage of sperm with normal shape.
The procedure of sample collection and delivery can be performed in several different ways. The most usual way here is getting sperm sample by masturbation in a special clean cup. Another way is to get sample during sex with a condom but you need to wash the condom before using to get rid of any substances that can kill sperm. Your doctor also may provide you with special condoms that contain no such substances. After sex you need to seal that condom in a special container.
In clinic sperm sample will be tested for all above said parameters. There are certain normal values of semen variables that have been set by World Health Organization. Clinic might follow these parameters or use its own normal values. And as long as sperm is a very specific liquid samples should be taken several times to get a proper semen description.
In some cases special bacteriological analysis of sperm can be performed to check for different germs. In fact, even in normal condition sperm is not sterile - there is always a certain level of germs colonization but it is usually pretty low. Sometimes a special sort of biochemical analysis of prostate secret and its components can be performed. That information is used to find out the normal functionality of prostate. Different parameters (that in this case are called markers) are measured during biochemical analysis.
These are the basic parameters that can be measured but there are many other tests that can be performed in a search for problems with infertility. Special tests in treatments of other sexual problems can be more complex that a simple sperm analysis. In some cases for tests of sperm even surgical methods are used.
