Wimbledon winners and champions

Added: 12/08/2005

The Championships, Wimbledon were first played under the supervision of the Croquet Club and All England Lawn Tennis in 1877 at a territory near Worple Road, Wimbledon; the single event held that year was Gentlemen's Singles. Since that time a large number of great players went down to history of tennis as Wimbledon winners.

Wimbledon is the oldest and, perhaps, most important event in the sport of tennis. Held every summer, the championship is the third Grand Slam championship played annually. Wimbledon is historically preceded by the French Open and the Australian Open and is followed by the US Open. The championship (by the way, the only one of the Grand Slam tournaments played on grass tennis courts) lasts for two weeks, subject to extensions due rain. Separate championships are at the same time held for Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Doubles, Gentlemen's Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Youth championships - Girls' Singles, Boys' Singles, Girls' Doubles and Boys' Doubles - are held as well.

Furthermore, special invitational competitions are held: 45 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, 35 and over Ladies' Doubles, the 35 and over Gentlemen's Doubles, and wheelchair tennis doubles.
At Wimbledon, historically less prize money is awarded in the Ladies' events than in the Gentlemen's events. The French Open also provides bigger prize money for men, but the U.S. Open and the Australian Open provide parity. The sums awarded to the winners of each of the main events in 2005 are as follows (the amounts shown for the doubles events are per pair):

- Gentlemen's Singles: £630,000
- Ladies' Singles: £600,000
- Gentlemen's Doubles: £218,500
- Ladies' Doubles: £203,250
- Mixed Doubles: £90,000
