Reasons for cesarean may be quite different

Added: 02/22/2006

Reasons for cesarean are much more numerous than just the aspiration to simplify the delivery process. Cesarean surgery procedure is absolutely indispensable in some cases, for example placenta previa, placental abruption simply necessitate this operation. The essence of the cesarean surgery lies in the following: the doctors help the woman to deliver the baby by means of surgical intrusion.

Cesarean surgery is so wide-spread nowadays that it has ceased to be something scary and extraordinary. This surgical procedure consists in making an incision in the woman's uterus and abdomen, and delivering the baby through it. It is a well-known fact that Cesarean surgery can be either planned or unplanned. A planned Cesarean surgery can be made indispensable by a number of reasons. As regards the unplanned Cesarean surgery, the decision to perform it can be made by the doctors once the labor has already begun, on the basis of certain unforeseen circumstances.

According to the statistics the Cesarean surgery is performed in over 20 per cent of cases. Despite the fact that Cesarean section is quite a common operation nowadays, the risk imposed by it on the health of the mother and the child. Needless to say that normal vaginal delivery is far safer, but it is not always possible. Among the Cesarean surgery risks are the following negative consequences: infection, bowel or bladder injuries, excessive bleeding, blood clots, postpartum pain and others. What is more, there is no escape from the long recovery stay at the hospital.

Cesarean surgery can also produce a negative influence on the future pregnancies. The risk is great of the placenta accrete and placenta previa abnormalities. It is true that in some cases, there is no vital necessity for the Cesarean surgery, but in certain cases, it is indispensable. There are cases when refusing to perform the Cesarean section means placing the baby's well-being into jeopardy.

Certain reasons for Cesarean surgery make the operation inevitable and therefore planned long before the labor begins. The following reasons for Cesarean make the surgery pre-requisite: a previous Cesarean surgery, performed with vertical incision necessitates another Cesarean surgery. But what has to have in mind is that in the case of the previous Cesarean surgery performed with the horizontal uterine incision, vaginal birth can be an option. Should the prospective mother have had a uterine surgery, especially invasive, Cesarean surgery is required. In the case of the expected triplets (quadruplets or more), Cesarean surgery may allow to eliminate the risk of vaginal trauma.

Among the reasons for cesarean is the baby expected to be very large. If the prospective mom is diabetic, the cesarean surgery is highly advisable. Also the reasons for cesarean can be the position of the baby, in particular, transverse or breech positions may necessitate a cesarean section. Still, in the case of twins it is possible to give birth to one child through vaginal delivery and to the other by means of the cesarean section on condition that the first child is in breech and the second head down. Fetal diseases or abnormalities are also important reasons for Cesarean, so are placenta previa and placental abruption. If the mother is HIV positive and the viral load is high, cesarean section is inescapable. Unplanned cesarean section can be called for by the symptoms stressing the risk of the vaginal delivery, for example, if the cervix doesn't dilate or the baby doesn't move in the canal.
