According to radio surgery history the first radio surgical unit was built up by Coles and Oregon. It offered the fully rectified (modulated) and partially rectified (half-wave modulated) currents, while in 1976 Ellman minimized the unit and added the cutting current (fully filtered).
It needs mentioning that radio surgery celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2001. With the construction of the first device by Leksell thousands of people have been successfully treated. Proton beam radio surgery contributed much to the development of the branch. John Lawrence's inventions revolutionized the entire approach. In the late 1980s the first Gamma Knife device was set up in the US. From 1990 to 1996 Phillips was constructing SRS200 Linac system. In 1997 the world's first Novalis shaped beam radio-surgical unit was installed.
Because of many years of experience with the techniques of radio surgery, it is evinced that a great variety of fields is offered in the surgical dermatology: fibromas, resection of benign and malignant skin tumors (histiocytomas, seborrheic keratoses verrucae, dermal and epidermal nevi, basaliomas, senile precanceroses), ablation of senile angiomas, sebaceous gland hyperplasias, keloids condylomas rhinophymas, xanthelasmas at the eyelid, superficial tattoos, spider nevi, spider vein, couperose, sclerotherapy of teleangiectasia, excisions at acne inverse, operative hemostasis (mono- or bipolar), skin-resurfacing, epilation,.
The above mentioned conditions refer to application of radio surgery in dermatology. The advantages of radio surgery techniques applied in dermatology are: precise and fast work, easy handling and better view of the operation spot, reduction of postoperative disorders, fast healing of wounds, insignificant cicatrisation tendency, and protection of adjacent tissue. Histological examinations proved minor tissue damage using radio surgical instruments. But the main advantage for doctors is the absence of tension and pressure when working with radio surgical device as with the scalpel. The advantage for the patients? The surgery is painless and allows for a quick recovery.
Radio surgery is another application in a non-invasibe brain surgery. It's a new kind of brain surgery which guarantees full and soon recovery and almost no side effects. During the operation the patient is awake and is fully recovered in some days. The principle if non-invasive brain surgery is the usage of radiation to extract the tumor. The Gamma Knife device enables operating previously inoperable patients because the tumors were too deep or too close to vital organs and structures. The high dose at exact parameters and of a targeted lesion is brought to the place of tumor. The whole procedure takes only minutes.
In the past two decades a great variety of radio surgical techniques have been developed and improved. Different examinations proved the benefits and the risks of radio surgery. Additional applications of radio-surgery are being estimated now. The results obtained by radio surgery have become more available.
