Race Pace Model Of Training Justifies The Hopes

Added: 12/28/2005

Nowadays trainers of young swimmers use a race pace model of training. It is an alternative to the traditional training models when sportsmen used to spend all day long in a swimming pool. This high intensity training, with less time and volume needed, is showing good results at the Olympics. Here we will present a race pace model description in brief that will illustrate how it works. Surely, like most other methods, it also has some swimmers who face the race pace model problems.

Today swimmers get the chance to not spend nearly as much time in the swimming-pool training all day, repeatedly swimming from one side of the swimming-pool to the other. Progressive coaches now offer the innovative prospective model of training that is called the race pace model of training. It is borrowed from other sports (especially running) and is adopting well to the swimmers.

During many years the main model of training focused on the lactate level. This index shows the physical condition of the sportsman before and after training, and during the long time it is used, to define if the load is enough or not. But in general, runners and swimmers spend, and continue spending a lot of time performing a continuing long, but not extensive load. And it was the only main model of training.

Now researchers offer the new innovative model of training called the race pace model of training. It has been used with runners for some time, and they show quite good results.

Let's present you a race pace model description.

The nature of the race pace model of training is the interchanging of
the load. At first it is a short and great load, then a little longer, but at a lower pace. At the end, once again with a short and great load (but longer and greater than the first one).

Some coaches and sportsmen believe that training in high intensity has better results than with the usual method of training which calls for great volume. And several sportsmen have already proven this to be the case. First of all, they are runners. Because the race pace model of training has been used for runners for some time, there is even a special program for runners' training called the five pace program. It includes regular training sessions of high intensity.

This program is now being adopted for the swimmers now. For example, the program may consist of the following. A morning swim at the race pace or below, and high intensity training faster than race pace, with short breaks in the evening. There should also be several aerobic training periods, i.e. with long and low-speed loads; for example, five times a week.

Surely, there are some race pace model problems. The thing is that this model is not yet fully proven. Experience in other sports shows that great volume aerobic training usually gives high results. But during the last Olympics, it was shown that there are many advantages of the race pace model of training - except time safety. Sportsmen showed that the right position in the water during the swimming, and the generated force (that is the most important items during the competition providing the result and win) are easily and accurately achieved by the sportsmen who were training according to the high intensity model, i.e. race pace model of training. They performed in the above areas better, and easier, and got higher results.

So, the efficiency of the race pace model of training was shown and proven. Surely, only time will show all the advantages and disadvantages of the method in detail, but even now we should say that it is a very prospective model of training.

So, as you can see, the race pace model of training allows having better results while spending less time for training. Maybe in the near future, the training of high intensity will replace the traditional aerobic training of great volume. But let's not forget about traditional time-proven models. Maybe they are not so old-fashioned.
