Added: 02/16/2006

With a name like psychosurgery, you know it's going to include some serious stuff. Leucotomy as well as sympathectomy are popular psychosurgery types and widely spread in medical operations in different parts of the whole world. In general it is the kind of operation conducted over the brain and within different parts of it for treatment of different disorders in psychological state of a person.

It can be said for sure that the variety of different kinds of treatments for different diseases nowadays can cope with almost any disease and illness as well as suit any taste of the patient. Apart from traditional treatment kinds and different types of medicines we can come across different unusual and exotic kinds of treatment. Sometimes they are very helpful, sometimes they are just like a trick for people being treated and they easily believe the results and really consider the very treatment to be helpful and truthful.

Some kinds of treatment are not so exotic but nevertheless not widely spread and that is why they attract special attention of people. Some treatments are rather common for one country at the same time when used in another country they are rather strange and are not accepted by native people, or, on the other hand, people consider such treatment full of power of spiritual and saint origin without understanding the whole process and its principles.

One of the most interesting treatments nowadays is psychosurgery and it must be said a countless number of different psychosurgery types have been used till nowadays. In general, it will be useful to give the definition for the word "Psychosurgery". Well, psychosurgery and psychosurgery types are denoted as surgeries of the brain or autonomic nervous system involving the severance of neutral pathways.

Such a surgery is commonly used for effecting different changes in behavior of the patient. Of course, as it has been said a little bit earlier, there are some psychosurgery types. People classify two main psychosurgery types: leukotomy and sympathectomy. Of course, there are some differences between them in their history as well as in their character and cases they are usually used in. It will be interesting to know some more details about both of the types.

Leucotomy is also called prefrontal lobotomy and it is intentional severing of the pre-frontal cortex from thalamic region of the brain. On the other hand, sympathectomy is also intentional severing but of the sympathetic nerve trunk. Both the kinds are rather often used in different cases of people with diseases connected with psychological state and diseases connected with brain disorders. The history of usage of these kinds of treatment is rather long and full of names connected with its development.

As concerns lobotomy one of the first attempts of usage of it belongs to 1935 and its usage was rather successful. At the beginning a few people believed in the therapy and consulted the doctor. But later, with the course of time more and more people tended to such treatment and were really pleased with the results. Later such a person as Walter Freeman used the so-called "ice pick lobotomy" and this type of radical surgery was also rather effective and helpful for a great amount of people.

The popularity of theses psychosurgery types can be explained by the fact that this surgery is unrelated and leaves no scars afterwards. Nevertheless, the results in most cases are really very impressive. Besides only local anesthesia is used in such a case that is why there is not a really great harm to the health of the patient.

In conclusion it must be said that psychosurgery types of treatment are rather popular and frequently used nowadays as in most cases they give good results and the patients are satisfied with them.
