Phalloplasty as complete reconstruction of penis

Added: 01/19/2006

Complete reconstruction (also known as phalloplasty) is a surgical penis enlargement. It's curious to note that each year the technology of phalloplasty improves and more and more surgeons and clinics offer this service. According to the recent studies modifying reconstruction will soon become as popular for men as breast augmentation for women. By the way, for some men the procedure has not only cosmetic, but also medical meaning (for example, for those who have lost their penis due to an accident or illness).

Complete reconstruction has become a quite well-known surgical procedure. The basic steps of this procedure and those of modifying reconstruction are the same. However, complete reconstruction of a penis on cisgendered men is often simpler because the urethra ends in front of the genital area. As for transsexuals, their urethra ends near the vaginal opening, so if a woman would like to change sex via modifying reconstruction it will take many efforts to lengthen urethra considerably. The mentioned urethra lengthening is considered to be the most difficult step in the phalloplasty. As a matter of fact, modifying reconstruction is likely to cause most complications. Thus, thanks to modern surgical means it has become possible nowadays to enhance the thickness and length of man's penis. The procedure has the name of phalloplasty (or complete reconstruction) and is performed by means of a penis stretcher. No change in the so-called "angle of the dangle" is made. As well, the stretching causes no undesired effect upon erection and ejaculation. It's worthy admitting that with complete reconstruction men are provided with permanent length if they wear special penis stretcher for at least four months and during four hours each day. Complete reconstruction of penis usually takes approximately an hour and a half. As a rule, man can leave the out-patient surgery centre in about two hours. Speaking about the peculiarities of complete reconstruction of a penis, it's worthy admitting that erectile prothesis may be inserted into the neo-phallus. In this way, the erectile tissue can be replaced and enable necessary sexual penetration. The mentioned option is usually performed for healing reasons in a separate surgery. By the way, several types of erectile prothesis are known to be used in modern medical practice. They range from simple rods with a hinge, which provides neo-penis with the possibility to either hang down or stand up. This helps to elaborate pumping systems. Generally speaking, there are three techniques for phalloplasty procedure: using a free graft from the leg or arm, using a muscle from a belly or using fatty tissue from the belly. One of the most frequently used techniques of complete reconstruction is a free graft from human arm or leg. It involves using the tissue from the inner side of the forearm or sometimes from the leg. This free graft of tissue is removed to its original place and then - rolled up with its particular part forming a new urethra. The next step of the procedure is grafting the tissue to its new place between thighs. Such technique is considered to be one of the most efficient ones producing the best results in both penis aesthetics and functioning. Be aware there's always a certain risk of various complications. For example, the risk of infection stands at approximately 6%. It may result in excess scar formation and longer time of antibiotic usage. It's worthy admitting that some men appear to be unsatisfied with the phalloplasty results and therefore require new operation. This usually takes more money as well as more time for recovery. Thus, in spite of the fact complete reconstruction of penis is a wide-spread service in medical institutions, every man should be aware of possible consequences and complications of this procedure.
