While speaking about bags types it is necessary to mention that bags types usually depended on the material that was used for making the bags. The first bags were made of textile. The textile was represented either with cotton or with jute. Traditionally, jute was used for those bags that were used for carrying heavy items. As for paper bags their production began long ago, but it was rather expensive.
In order to give bags review, it is first necessary to give the definition of carrier bags and sacks. So, it is a container that consists of several flat walls made of some flexible material that are closed at one end. The materials used for making bags must provide necessary properties for transportation and filling the goods the bag contains. There is not much information about the bags used in the past. It is believed that the materials used for making bags at that time did not satisfy the test of time. Nevertheless, they were used; the most common materials were animal leather as well as textile.
It is also possible to say that there was no real packaging industry either. Bags were made only when ordered. One of the most well-known bags types was a leather money-pouch. These bags were made by those who lived on Crete 2000 B.C. the pouches were extremely popular with all men of the island. Speaking about bags types it is also necessary to mention the bale of cotton that was used for rather a long time.
One of the most popular bags types today is sacks that appeared between 1700 and 1800. The bags were made of textile. There were two kinds of textile that could be applied. First of all it was cotton. But cotton was not very good for transporting heavy goods. In such cases they used jute for making stronger bags.
The development of sacks industry largely depends on the technical innovations that happen all over the world. One of the most important innovations in the 18th century was the improvement of the sewing machine. Actually, the sack industry represents the oldest sector in which the sewing machine has been used.
One of the most important bags types is of course paper bags. The first paper bags appeared about 1800. At that time the technique of making the bags was rather simple. A sheet of paper was rolled into a triangle. At that time the use of paper bags was very expensive. Paper as well as its predecessors, such as parchment, were traditionally used for writing. Paper was not used for packaging. At first paper was produced by hand per sheets. Some parts of the process were mechanized, for example bleaching, stamping and washing. As for the basic fabrication it was still done by hand. The round-sift that was invented in 1803 allowed to produce larger quantities of paper. They invented a machine that could produce paper sheets with 75 cm in the width.
The first machines that produced paper sacks produced sheets of paper. It was Hermann Hölscher who invented the machine producing paper triangles. Later the man founded the firm called Windmöller & Hölscher. The machine that was invented in 1869 was able to produce 40 paper sacks per minute.
In 1877 they invented a machine that produced flat paper sacks. The machine folded the sheet of paper in two sewing both sides together. This type of machine exists now as well but it is used only for textile products. The first machine that could sew sacks with folded bottom was invented in 1894. But the machine came to use only in 1904. However, when it started to be used it was already outdated because it used sheets of paper instead of rolls of paper.
