Speaking about collectibles it's necessary to draw your attention to their origins of these options. So, the earliest collectibles are known to have been included as incentives with their products. But it was many centuries ago. One of the brightest examples is cigarette cards in various packs of cigarettes. These popular items which developed the secondary market and even considered to have become the subject of so-called "collectible crazes". Generally speaking, many collectibles of the past came to be sold separately and were not used as marketing tools with the purpose of increasing the appeal to other products available on the market.
It's worthy admitting that many manufacturers try to encourage collecting by creating entire series of various collectibles each of them is differentiated in some particular fashion and style. Among the widely-spread examples are sports cards with depicted individual players or various designs, etc. It goes without saying that many collectors are appear to be extremely enthusiastic and often try to collect and assemble complete set of all the possible and available variations. So, there may be different kinds of collectibles: starting from militaria souvenirs and finishing with decorative collectibles.
As a matter of fact the early versions of products which are manufactured in smaller quantities (before they become popular as collectibles) in some cases command exorbitant premiums on the secondary market. By the way collectibles rarely prove to be a really spectacular investment on the mature market. And it's true.
Generally speaking, according to recent studies in this field a number of circumstances should take place so that an item, one of the collectible series, becomes an exceptionally valuable option. Such objects are often referred to as collector's items thanks to their rarity. Thus, the mentioned kinds of objects have been assessed as valuable enough to be sold for outstandingly substantial amounts of money. I can't but say that some of them even later destroy different remainders of these items and cause therefore forced scarcity.
As it has already been mentioned, one of the popular kinds of collectibles is cigarette cards issued by tobacco manufacturers all over the world. Their main function is protecting cigarettes by stiffening the pack and gaining customer loyalty to the particular cigarettes brand (so, it is also referred to as tobacco advertising form). Nowadays many cigarette cards depict celebrities (actors and actresses, football and baseball players, etc.) and that's why they attract the attention of both cigarette smokers and collectors who consider cigarette cards as one of the most significant collectibles.
Thus, very often it occurs that some objects primarily designed for other purposes (for example, toys) become as popular among collectors so that in future they are marketed specifically for the audience which collects them. One of the outstanding examples of the mentioned phenomenon are "Star Wars" action figures.
