Opioids Review and the Consequences of Addiction

Added: 12/14/2005

The practice of producing narcotics has been widespread since antiquity. Technological progress and developments of trade led to spread of narcotics worldwide, and people began to use them not only in medical purposes. There are several classes and groups of narcotics. Opioids are included in one of the groups and are produced from poppies. This group contains natural and synthetic substances with morphine-type compounds: opium alkaloids, semisynthetic derivatives, synthetic opioids, etc. This opioids review will help to discover the difference between them.

A brief opioids review shows that opioids, also known as opiates, are the chemical compounds that help to relieve pain and have soporific and euphorigenic properties. The word "opioid" derives from "opium", the substance that was discovered long time ago. But in the beginning of the XIXth century the first opium alkaloid was produced and after the invention of syringe the drug addiction became widespread and has been developing till now. Modern society seems to know everything about narcotics of opioid group, opioid reviews in articles and published works about the effects of drug addiction and the consequences endeavor to prevent people from narcotics. Nevertheless, the drug addiction problem is one of the most important all over the world. The opioids are used in medicine for relieving the pain and in some cases for serious diseases, for example cancer, but also like anesthetics against mild and chronic pain and even against cough. Of course, you should use them carefully because the risk of dependence and tolerance is quite high.

But opioids are used not only like medications. The main characteristic of opioids is the feeling of euphoria, calmness and pacification that they cause. That is why it is not a surprise that people began to use them as a kind of entertainment, trying to escape from reality and to intensify the pleasure. The dependence on this state has psychological reasons rather than physical dependence especially in at the outset.

In the opioids review, the opioids are divided into four main parts: endogenous opioids (endorphins, dynorphins, enkephalins), opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine), semisynthetic derivatives (heroin, oxycodone, diamorphine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, etc.), synthetic opioids. Let's review some of opioids that are widespread.

The most widely-known opioids are morphine and heroin. Morphine is the opium alkaloid; it was synthesized from opium and was named in honor of the Greek god of dreams Morpheus, because of its properties. The action of morphine is connected with the central nervous system. It is a good painkiller and surgical anesthetic. Moreover, morphine relieves of the sense of fear and anxiety. The user feels euphoria, no fear, no hunger, no pain.

This drug becomes addictive very quickly: after 12-24 hours and users desire to take it in the higher doses for the best impression. The tolerance occurs as a result of psychological needs, it is possible to overcome, while the physical dependence induces the user to take one more dose. The physical dependence makes the user jaded, causes unpleasant feeling and pain in the body. This is the opioids review and the characteristics of withdrawal syndrome.

Heroin is a semisynthetic derivative of the morphine and has stronger effect. It is very toxic and causes the addiction faster than morphine. Heroin can be injected, smoked, sniffed. There are many ways of usage, but the effects and consequences are the same. To get rid of dependence sometimes is very hard or impossible. In many cases the usage of drugs may lead directly to death.

The opioids review shows that the variety of opioids is great. Though the opioids were invented for the medical purposes, the usage of them has been changed, because their euphorigenic properties seemed to be much attractive. First of all, we should think about consequences and our own health not losing our identity.
