Occupation: Swimming as Work

Added: 01/31/2006

How can something as fun as swimming to be considered work? But in fact, swimming exists more as an occupation and less as a pastime in many countries. Swimming as work has the primary goal - to catch or collect a fish or other sea products under water with the naked or protected hands, with use of traps, harpoons, traps and other specially developed means. They are abalone and pearl divers and those who swim for scientific research. This may seem fun to the non-professional, but on closer examination it is not as easy as it seems.

What is dangerous when you're performing swimming as work? The native divers work under pressure and depend on air, which is acting from a surface through hoses or taking place in devices for breath under water. Any infringement of submission of air can cause death from an asthma, decompression disease or barotraumas because of fast rise.

Features of the given work complicate the rendering to the diver of any forms of the help and health services. Divers deal with dead or wounded sea animals. In some areas, it raises a risk of an attack of sharks and other sea predators.

Swimming as work can cause a downturn of your body temperature and lead to hypothermia.

Between dives, divers work onboard small fishing boats and can be exposed to sharp influence of the sun and bad weather. The divers dealing with sea animals can be exposed to influence of strong poisons. Diving works in a coastal zone include lithographic, geomorphologic and biological researches at the bottom of coastal range, and work on studying dynamics of water weights in a benthonic layer.

They refer to supervision and registration on a photo of ground forms dynamics, definition of the geometrical sizes and orientations of a bottom ice, installation and service of benthonic stations and sedimentary process, sampling of benthos and many others. Besides, there is an experience of performance of complex works on diving inspection of underwater parts designs, of hydraulic engineering constructions and pipelines

Many divers use the out-of-date equipment in which breakages are possible. Long influence of pressure can lead to idiopathic osteonecrosis. Using compressed air submitted from a surface or an aqualung, dives under water up to 196, 85 feet depth for hunting for fishes with the help of a harpoon, for gathering mollusks and for gathering sea animals for aquariums and check of fish gardens.

In breaks (when does not dive) can observe of the compressor, serve air hoses, operate a boat, prepare the catch for storage and transportation. Before departure from village, he examines the equipment for diving, can examine and serve motors of a boat and the compressor if necessary. The commercial diver; the boatman, abalone and pearl divers, the angler, coastal waters; auxiliary workers relate to swimming as work.

Swimming as work is carried out in the general complex of works on research of morphometry and physical properties of ice formations. Diving researches of an underwater part of ice formations allow receiving materials for verification of used methods of hummocks characteristics definition and grounded hummock and increasing accuracy of measurements.

Besides, swim for scientific research allows executing researches of pockets in underwater part of ice formations, estimating speed of movement of water and carrying out the sampling water and ice at the bottom surface of a hummock. The diving station includes the experts, which have special qualification and can work under the ice. Diving descents are carried out according to Uniform safety rules of work on diving works (part I, Rules of diving service, 1992). Descents are carried out in diving suits of a dry type.
