Nail polish is a liquid agent for covering nails for decorative and cosmetic purposes. Women began to use nail polishes relatively not long time ago. To be more precise, nail polishes have come into history in 1920s. Shortly afterwards, they gained a wide popularity. Since the first polish was offered for sale in 1925 by the cosmetic company Max Factor, it has changed a lot. The investigation of nail polishes ingredients by cosmetologists and chemists led to the introduction of new technologies that are widely used today.
The liquid structure of nail polishes usually consists of the following nail polishes ingredients: colored pigments and solvents. Many producers add significantly more ingredients. For example, formaldehyde is a synthetic resin ingredient, which is included in the nail polish formula to achieve the durability effect. This substance is added as a remedy for strengthening nail plates and makes them stronger. In order to make the polish bright and durable, nitrocellulose is added. This substance is extracted from the cotton or wood fiber. Its main disadvantage is that nitrocellulose may produce a yellowing effect, if the nail polish is worn over a long time period. Colored pigments serve for color. At the very beginning, there was a limited number of pigments available, that is why nail polishes had only red color palette: rose, scarlet, dark red, crimson, etc. In 1950s, other colors appeared. If the lacquer includes such nail polishes ingredients as natural or artificial pearl pigments, the polish will be pearly. All these nail polishes ingredients are added to the solvents - volatile liquids, such as butyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, etc. Ingredients may also include toluene - a solvent that does not let the polish precipitate and prevents colored pigments from getting destroyed. Toluene properties also allow the polish to dry out quickly, but it is considered to be toxic.
Nail polishes that include all these ingredients in required proportions and beautiful bright colors are of high quality. Such nail polishes will lay on the nail surface smoothly, not leaving any lines; they have liquid properties, but do not flow; they are durable. And finally, the polish should dry out in a few minutes - long waiting is not convenient. Today there are nail polishes that dry very quickly - in just a minute. They are called express polishes. In order to extend the time of polish wearing, cosmetologists recommend applying special base coats under the color and top coats over it. The base coat will also protect your nail surface from harmful substances that can spoil the natural nail color, making it yellow. There are usually many useful ingredients in the base coat that are healthy for nails. It is highly recommended by cosmetologists to use only high quality nail polishes and acetone-free nail polish removers to keep your nails in a good condition. Also, they advise not to wear nail polish for a long period of time. Just like you, your nails may need rest, too.
