Model portfolio is considered to be one of the most important tools of any model while getting jobs and interviewing. There are a lot of tips for the models concerning their portfolio. One of the most important advice is that portfolio should contain only the best photos of the model. It is the quality but not quantity that should determine your portfolio. Professional photographers should be able to notice and show the assets of the models in the best way.
Model portfolio is a "catalogue" or a "resume" of the model's abilities. Model portfolio is considered to be one of the most important tools for getting jobs and interviewing. Model portfolio contains a lot of pictures of the model as well as some "tearsheets". "Tearsheets" are pages from articles and advertisements where the pictures of the model were used. It is not difficult to guess that the "tearsheets" are of paramount importance for the employers because they can see that the model's performance.
A model portfolio should contain the pictures demonstrating the model in the best way for this very type of photos. For example, if you are applying for swimwear advertisement, your portfolio should contain some swimwear shots but not shots in mid-winter with you wearing a fur coat.
There are two main shots that should be included to every model portfolio. They are full-length and headshot. The most important thing for models is of course their face. So, the headshot is of paramount importance for any portfolio.
When we say that the person is beautiful, we often we imply the facial features. We can also judge about the character and the personality by his/her face. So, a good headshot is of paramount importance in model marketing.
But the body of the model is also of paramount importance. The full-length shot is necessary for the majority of the employers. Traditionally the full-length shot is a shot of the model wearing a fitted dress, swimsuit, lingerie or leotard. These types of clothes can show the figure and the tone of the model. The main purpose of the full-length shot is to show the outlines of the body. That is why fitted clothes are of paramount importance. Never put on loose clothes for this type of shots because it will make your figure look heavier. It may also seem that you are trying to hide you figure.
Beside the basic pictures model portfolio often includes additional shots. Traditionally they are 3/4 length shots, that is the picture of the model from her head to hips. The model is represented in different types of clothing in order to show the look of the model from formal style to casual.
Professional photographers know that if some part of the model's body is especially beautiful, it should be included into the photos. They should also give posing tips during shooting.
It is also very important to show that the model is able to interact with different types of products. Thus, in order to create a well-rounded and dynamic portfolio, it is necessary to include the pictures looking like the advertisement. Don't forget about tear sheets.
Normally a model portfolio includes from 15 to 30 tears and photos. Nevertheless it is quality, not quantity that should dominate. A portfolio including 5 perfect shots is better than 20 perfect shots and 20 common ones.
As you get a new experience, tears and shots, it is recommended to change your previous photos for new ones.
If you do not have enough photos for your portfolio, never include bad tearsheets or pictures to it. Photographers and clients will remember you by the worst image in your portfolio. Do not let them do it.
One more detail is that photographers and clients appreciate current portfolio, but not old ones.
