Milestones in Orthopedic Surgery History

Added: 02/20/2006

The thing about orthopedic surgery history is that the "history" is continuing to evolve and change before our very eyes. No sooner does one form of technology effect this history, it becomes outdated and replaced by something even more hi-tech. And so it goes. During various stages, the history the orthopedic surgery suffered significant changes. And there were a lot of reasons. One of the stages of this history is considered a history of military orthopedic surgery. And the foundation of the first Orthopedic Institute is another stage of the orthopedic surgery history.

The history of orthopedic surgery is not very long as the first orthopedic institute has appeared quite recently. Despite this fact it has been developing extremely fast nowadays. The orthopedic surgery history is considered inconsistent. Different obstacles have occurred on the way of the orthopedic surgery development. One of the obstacles was diarrhea technical arms of the physicians. Another obstacle possible to be named in certain moments of the orthopedic surgery history is the fact that a physician conducting operations did not follow the law.

Surgeon R. Gibbs from New York performed spinal surgery for the first time in 1911. Before that time, physicians had thought of the idea of performing such an operation on the spine as ludicrous to say the least. But the development of the technical base has caused a breakout in this area of medicine. At the same time a physician could conduct the operation only in the event when a patient was under the threat of death. But if there was no threat for a patient to die, and after an operation the patient perished, a physician was at risk to be persecuted by the law. But gradually such a position was changed and that in turn changed the orthopedic surgery history.

The history of the military orthopedic surgery brought its contribution into the development of the orthopedic surgery. During the Second World War physicians-surgeons who conducted the operations contributed a lot into the surgery.

The success of the first spinal operations gradually changed the attitude regarding this delicate operation for the better, and subsequently more operations were noticed by practicing surgeons. Since that time, the methods of undertaking the operation on the spine have evolved. Nowadays the method which was used for the first operations on spine has been almost forgotten. Presently operations on spine are divided into two types according to the access to vertebra.

The first type means the cut on the front side, the second - on the back one. The first type is considered more painful, the second one - less. The first type is supposed to bring better results. But it is not suitable for the patients who are not in an excellent state of health. The second type may be followed by some complications but it depends more on the skills of physicians and on the development of the technology. These two types of the operation also differ in the effect on the spine. In the USA surgeons conduct more often the second type of the operation. Here surgeons are better armed technically in contrast with Russia.

Very often such operations are paid for not by the patients but by the insurance companies. In Russia unlike the USA the first type of the operation is more often preferred. In Russia diarrhea technical base does not allow to do that number of the operation which is necessary. But scientific potential of the medicine here is high. For example, in these two countries the orthopedic surgery history has an essential difference depending on the region.

In the USA, conducting such an operation of the second type with the metallic plates is introduced into the spine. Very often during the operation on spine bone tissues may be transplanted from donors or patients. The Combination of the metallic plate with bone tissues brings about the best results. The higher technical base helps greatly surgeons while undertaking such operations.

Thereby, we can see that the orthopedic surgery history is long and not unambiguous.
