Historians believe that the first brewery pub in the world appeared in the 11th century in Germany. They say it is still operating. Nowadays breweries are made of stainless steel, the most appropriate material for brewing industry, as it can come into reaction with very few chemicals, which save beer from any odd flavors.
There are different kinds of breweries depending on the variety and volume of the beer produced. These are the most common brewery definitions: a microbrewery, brewerypub, contract brewing company, regional brewery, regional specialty brewery and craft pub. The biggest breweries are macrobrewery, industrial brewery and megabrewery annually producing, according to different estimations, more than two million barrels of beer.
Speaking about the first and the smallest one, the microbrewery, it is always taken into consideration that these local beer producers are no new players on the market. The history of this brewery type goes to the times when the majority of villages, cities and towns had their own brewery.
It is a curious fact that before refrigeration was invented people couldn`t manage to transport beer because it went bad very fast. But after refrigeration came into use many regional breweries were closed in favor of the larger ones located in the country`s huge administrative and economic centers. For example, Anheiser Busch or Miller. However, beer was still produced by people in small home breweries. The prime time of beer manufacturing in microbrewery was the years of the prohibition, when the sale of alcohol was prohibited by the law. And the microbrewery was reborn. After this period of time people not only improved the production of beer in their home breweries, but also began to sell it in the so-called brewery pubs. Beer manufacturers were greatly encouraged by their families and friends.
According to different sources of information the first real and modern microbrewery was opened in 1976 in California State. Any microbrewery usually acts as a distributor by selling its beer to wholesale and retail consumers. If there is a special tap room in this brewery, beer can also be easily sold to any customer. So, brewery pubs are what followed the appearance of microbreweries, which sell only brewed beer of its own make. These pubs are often combined with a restaurant. The Association of Brewers says that in 2003 there were more than a thousand brewery pubs in the USA. There are some of those in Ireland, but far less. The reason is that unlike American pubs very few Irish ones used to specialize in selling their own beer on premises.
The distinguishing feature of German microbreweries is that their majority is dependant on and owned by greater and larger beer companies. Almost the same situation is in Great Britain, where nowadays it`s pretty difficult to find an independent microbrewery.
Thus, different countries have their own peculiar and interesting features of breweries. But the love for beer is eternal: no matter what the method and place of brewery is, people enjoy beer and encourage the beer market to become more competitive and rich.
