Gymnastics schools were the most prestigious schools of that time in Ancient Greece. The schools were traditionally open-shaped grounds with classrooms, massage rooms, training rooms, washstands and cloakrooms outside.
There are several famous personalities which got their fame from massage sphere of Ancient Greece. Aesculapius is one of them. He worked not far from Macedonia in the 5th century B.C. Hippocrates is considered to be the founder of medicine. He used friction while treating dislocations and sprains, and kneading to cure constipation. The man was sure that all diseases result from natural causes and they should be treated with natural methods, such as visits to friends, music, baths, massage, fresh air, exercise, proper diet, exercise, healthy food and rest. He stated that all this helps man restore body and health. Traditionally, Hippocrates is characterized as holistic. Nevertheless, he is noted for the rational approach to prognosis, therapy, medicine, anatomy as well as separation medicine from religion and philosophy.
