Infertility is a big problem for couples who want a baby. And, it is not only a medical problem; it is a huge psychological stress. One out of every six couples in the world suffers from some sort of infertility. The origin of the problem can be different but the level of stress is the same.
But, as luck would have it, modern medicine can handle most problems of infertility. There are many new medications and special female and male surgial options to handle the problem.
In order to find the right treatment, it is necessary to find the actual cause of the problem. This is why special tests are performed.
In cases of male infertility, a special sperm evaluation is needed. Different sperm parameters like sperm count, volume, and sperm motility are measured in the test. The results will show the possible problem and find the right medication to solve it.
But, there are cases when medications are not effective in the treatment of male infertility. And, therefore, the many male surgial options that are available today can be used.
The most common male surgial options that are used in all medical institutions are testicular biopsy, testicular sperm aspiration, or TESA, percutaneous sperm aspiration, or PESA, and vasectomy reversal.
A testicular biopsy is a procedure in which samples of testicular tissues are being tested for sperm. Lately, a special technique that is called percutaneous testicular biopsy has come into wide use. It is very effective, but at the same time, it is less invasive than the other male surgical options.
PESA is a special procedure that can be performed under general or local anesthesia. A special 21 gauge butterfly needle is inserted into the caput epididymis. And, this needle is withdrawn until fluid enters the tubing. This procedure can be repeated several times to collect the amount of sperm that is needed. And, this sperm can be used to assist in the reproductive process or for sperm testing, in the cases where the man can't ejaculate his own sperm. Because they are very effective and provide the patient with little discomfort, different percutaneous male surgial options are getting more popular and more and more clinics offer these procedures today.
TESA is a pretty similar procedure but it is a bit more complex. Another procedure that it pretty close to TESA can also be used, testicular fine needle aspiration, or TFNA. These male surgical options allow bigger amounts of sperm in a single procedure than the PESA method allows.
A vasectomy is a usual birth control method, but it is permanent as well as a tubular sterilization for women. Therefore, to get back the ability to release sperm, a man needs another surgery called a vasectomy reversal. And, women can have a reanastomosis performed to revere a tubular sterilization.
In cases of female infertility when medications or procedures such as artificial insemination and ovarian drilling are not effective, different female surgical procedures like fallopian tube sterilization and laparoscopy are used.
