But at the early stages of human civilization people were certainly not spoilt for choice in terms of the selection of gemstones. In order to illustrate this point it might be useful to consider the multitude options in terms of diamond shape available today. Certainly, the cut depth and cut table are different from one diamond shape to another, nevertheless they should be well calculated in order to assure the greatest brilliance.

These factors are different from one crystal to another. Certainly, the original surface of the rough diamond is abundant in all kinds of fractures, chips and scratches. They are naturally present and are referred to as external blemishes. They are easily removed in the process of diamond polishing. Perfectly clear diamonds are a very rare occurrence and therefore they are the most valuable.
The next diamond characteristic to speak of is diamond cut. It is actually the ratio of the diamond depth to its diameter. If the diamond is properly cut and well proportioned, it becomes a fascinating sight to the eye. In this case the beam of light does not escape through the sides or the bottom of the diamond, but it rather reflected directly to the eye and accounts for the dazzling brilliance.
