A model agency is a company which is responsible for finding jobs for its models. It usually operates on commission. It can be really hard to choose a model agency which will find a good work by making various contacts with model management companies, photographers and other agencies, booking and billing for the jobs, and, of course, paying the models for their time spent.
An important thing the future model should do is choose a model agency which will handle all the necessary details and therefore allow the model to focus on the modelling job and forget about the business hassle.
As a matter of fact, the world's top model agencies are known to work in cooperation with model management companies, big-budget advertising agencies and respected fashion designers. By investing the money into developing their talent model agencies are able to increase their status in the fashion industry. Before you choose a model agency you have to be sure that it will help you in your professional training, provide you with test shoots and layout portfolio, put together composition cards and other necessary printed materials.
Everybody knows that periodically many model agencies open their doors to those who desire to become a fashion model. It is known as "open call". A lot of potential models gather together in the hallways of the agency and wait for their turn to be estimated by a number of judges. Such open-calls are almost free of charge, so that probably anyone is able to attend them. Be aware that during the open-call it's not you to choose a model agency, it's the agency to choose you. That's why it's important to be aware of some basic rules: slinky casual clothes, simple hair, natural minimalist makeup. A few informal snaps can be brought with you to the agency interview, for instance, a nice head shot, casual closed shot, etc.
Model search (or beauty contest) is also very popular. Several large modelling agencies are constantly looking for one more Naomi, Tyra or Christy.
One of the most expensive options offered by different agencies is modelling conventions. To attend them and get an opportunity to get acquainted with well-known representatives from various agencies, to learn more about high fashion industry the model has to pay too much money - according to recent estimations - about five thousand US dollars. The model is usually told that she will increase her chance of being discovered by famous, prestigious and biggest model agencies. However, the fees are so high that not every young girl can afford this kind of opportunity.
Thus, if your aim is to choose a model agency yourself you not necessarily have to wait around for an open-call or pay lots of money for participating in the modelling convention. Beware various modeling schools. They are not considered to be the best way to gain modelling experience. It is believed that modelling schools are just an outright scam. But it's your right to choose whether to attend the modelling school or not.
Even if you go directly to the model agency you will probably hear lots of false-sounding promises (to get working immediately or unusual fees). Beware them. Before getting in touch with agency it is better to check it out and make sure that it has already existed for more than three months and registered in the Yellow Pages with a nice big advertisement.
