What is the proper definition of oxygen mask?

There are many different oxygen mask uses applied in a wide range of areas from medicine to aircraft flying. The definition of an oxygen mask can be different depending on the purposes of this device. Oxygen healing therapy alone has several modifications of an oxygen mask with significant differences in their design. Each sector of man's activity also has its own definition.

Modern technology produces a great number of useful devices. One of such devices that have various uses is an oxygen mask. A great number of the oxygen masks is being manufactured these days. And what is interesting, almost every mask manufacturer has its own definition of oxygen mask. And each definition of oxygen mask depends on the area of application.

Medical equipment manufacturer can offer its own definition of oxygen mask, while in aircraft piloting this definition of oxygen mask can be totally different. No matter how many different oxygen mask uses there are in general this is a device to supply a person with oxygen or air which has a higher oxygen concentration than the air around.

The first use of the oxygen mask most people usually think of is a medicine use. Many different lung diseases can be treated using oxygen and in some healing therapies oxygen has to be inhaled regularly over a long period of time. In oxygen healing therapy oxygen mask of three basic designs are used. The first and probably the most widely used model is one that actually looks like a mask that covers mouth and nose of the patient. Such a form of the oxygen mask allows to achieve high and pretty intensive oxygen flow.

That sort of the oxygen mask works in concert with various oxygen supplying devices. Another modification of the oxygen mask which, in fact, is also used very often at hospitals and at home does not look like a mask at all. It is made of tubing. The special prong is inserted into nasal canal and the rest of tubing can be fixed behind the patient's ears. Such an oxygen mask is much easier to fix and more patients feel comfortable with it. And there is another oxygen mask design that is seldom used.

In rare cases, it is needed to insert special small catheter (which is made of flexible material) into a patient's trachea. A special necklace or some sort of a more complex device is used for getting it fixed. High rates of oxygen flow are necessary for proper work of this form oxygen mask because it is set through the mouth, nasal canal and throat which can impair the permeability of tubing. At least 1 LPM of oxygen flow is needed. And as long as the construction and usage of this modification of the oxygen mask is pretty complex it is only used at hospitals.

Besides, the medical use of oxygen masks there is another very widespread application of the mask - it is used by aircraft pilots. And here the design of the mask and the definition of the oxygen mask are completely different. Such masks are meant not only to deliver a necessary amount of oxygen to the pilot but it has to be made in a specific way. As long as air combat implies tough conditions the mask has to be able to withstand all the complications and work properly even under the extreme conditions. And it has to be constructed so that to provide a steady and regular flow of oxygen. If the oxygen flow will be faltering or the supply will be insufficient a pilot can get tired very fast. All the parameters of such an important device need to be individually tuned for each pilot to ensure better usage.
