First of all, what is the NCAA? The NCAA is referred to as a National Collegiate Athletic Association; this is a voluntary organization that involves approximately 1200 individuals, conferences, associations and institutions which manage various athletics programs of great number of universities and colleges in the United States of America.
Indianapolis, Indiana is the place of NCAA divisions' headquarters location and Myles Brand is currently the president of this association.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association is supposed to be one of the largest collegiate athletic organizations not only in America but in the whole world. The reason is in great level of popularity of college sports in the United States of America. Sop, National Collegiate Athletic Association is far more outstanding in the United States sports scene comparing with main sports bodies of national colleges in their own countries.
IAAUS (the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States) is the precursor of the NCAA. It is known to be established on March 31, 1906 to manage special rules for sports of amateurs in the United States of America. As a matter of fact, the IAAUS creation was motivated by then-president Roosevelt Theodore in reaction to his worry over the increasing number of deaths and serious injuries occurring in collegiate football. The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States later was called NCAA (the National Collegiate Athletic Association) in 1910.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association did not offer athletics for women up until the 1980s. Instead, an association that was called AIAW (the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) organized collegiate sports for women in the United States of America. Nevertheless, by 1982 all NCAA divisions offered women's national championship events and most members of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The NCAA divisions in 1973 have been split into three divisions: NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III. Under NCAA rules, NCAA Divisions I and II schools have the possibility to offer training to people for playing sport. In general, bigger schools participate in Division I and all others schools - in NCAA Divisions II and III. At the same time NCAA Division I of football consists of I-A and I-AA sub-divisions.
It's worthy admitting, that legislative structure of the National Collegiate Athletic Association is broken down into a number of committees and cabinets, involving various member schools representatives. Those committees and cabinets may be further divided into sub-committees.
Management Council is the legislation power of National Collegiate Athletic Association, which oversees all the committees and cabinets and involves schools representatives, such as faculty advisors and athletic directors. The staff of National Collegiate Athletic Association provides support, liaison and research, acting as guides, media and public relations.
By the way, Myles Brand is the current NCAA president.
