Introduction to Car Designers Tasks

Added: 03/20/2006

Automobile construction is a very important branch of the industry for a country's economy, but not many countries have that industry. United States, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan and some other countries have a huge automobile construction industry. The role of designers in car construction is important and car designers tasks include design of suspension and engine, design of interior and styling and many other tasks.

Car design or automobile design is the design of automobiles. The modern cars design is typically carried out by a big team of engineers and designers from a lot of different disciplines. As the product development effort part the designers' team should work closely with design engineers teams that are responsible for all aspects of the automobile. Car designers tasks are very diverse.

Special teams of engineers include: power-train, body and trim, chassis, production and electrical. Because of the great variety of car designers tasks the team of designers under the management of the design director as a rule consist of an interior designer (typically it is concerned to as stylists), an exterior designer, and a materials and color designer. Some other designers will be involved in other car designers tasks such as design of interior and styling, design of suspension and engine, detail design of both interior and exterior for instance a designer may have such task as designing the steering wheel or the rear light clusters. The materials and color designer typically work closely with the interior and exterior designers in developing interior colors, exterior color paints, wood trim, carpet, leathers, fabrics and so on.

In the United States of America automotive design achieved a turning point in the beginning of twentieth century (1924), when the national automobile market of USA started reaching satiation. Alfred P. Sloan Jr., who was the head of General Motors with the purpose of maintaining unit sales, invented annual model-year changes of design, to persuade owners of cars that they really needed to get a fresh replacement yearly.

Obsolescence - this is the name that critics gave to Alfred P. Sloan Jr., strategy. But Alfred preferred the "dynamic obsolescence" term. This approach had far-reaching results on the motor-car construction business, the product design field, and eventually the economy of the USA. The smaller companies couldn't support the expense and pace of re-styling every year. Ford Henry didn't like the model-year strategy, and because he adhered to a simplicity engineer notions, design integrity, and scale economics, General Motors surpassed sales of Ford in 1931 and in the industry after that period GM became the dominant player. The numerous changes of design also made it essential to apply a body-on-frame rather than the lighter.

In 1935 another turning point came, while automotive engineers suddenly abandoned research of aerodynamics when they founded that, among other troubles, aerodynamics would have a tendency to carry out one optimal single exterior shape. That fact would be terrible for unit sales, and for General Motors Corporation it would clearly work against their fresh approach of market differentiation. Engineering and style chosen their separate ways, and all body shapes were exposed plastic surgery yearly, whether or not the fundamental car had changed.

Thus, there are a lot of car designers tasks and car designers work is very important for each motor-car company.
