Intra vas device consists of a hollow silicone plug, which is implanted to vas deferens of the penis. These plugs prevent flow of sperm. As well as reversal procedure, implantation is quite a simple operation, which can be done right in the doctor's office and takes up to twenty minutes. Intra vas device can be implanted by any vasectomy provider; it also doesn't require any additional training. Intra vas device information is mainly given by its co-founder Canadian Dr. Pollock.
The device was first made in Shepherd Medical Company. It was tested on monkeys, but human trial also took place in 2001. These tests were safe ones. The device effectiveness has been already proven. However, there has been much discussion about it and its still being discussed now. Ninety men have been picked up to undergo intra vas device implantation. For eighteen months they will be followed to determine side effects (if any). It should be mentioned that the first trials weren't 100% successful. In some cases intra vas device did not fully block sperm (both motile and immotile). This resulted in the development of a larger device that perfectly served its purpose.
The Intra vas device mechanism of action is quite simple. A doctor caps the tubes that conduct sperm from testicles to penis with plugs. During the operation a pinpoint opening is usually made to insert plugs into the tubes.
The Intra vas device information obtained by researchers has distinguished a number of advantages and possible drawbacks. Intra vas device benefits are:
1. It doesn't require chemical reaction inside the vas.
2. It is performed by a relatively simple procedure, which can be carried in a doctor's office.
3. No damage to the vas.
4. It can be fitted and adjusted.
5. No possibility of migration.
It should be mentioned that the main benefit is intra vas device reversal. However, intra vas device information on reversal procedure says tests haven't proven yet a 100% efficacy of reversal. Restoring fertility can be questioned. Plugs block the vas, and it's still unknown if back-pressure will result in ruptures in a course of time. That would mean a dramatic drop of fertility. The thing is that tests carried out on monkeys lasted for months, but not longer period more than a year. Only further tests and time will tell.
On the other hand, there is an evident benefit of intra vas device usage. In vasectomy, to be sure to have a 100% successful reversal procedure, one has to consult a very skilled (and consequently expensive) micro-surgeon. It's not affordable for all people who would like to undergo this procedure. Removing plugs is quite easy and quick.
According to intra vas device information obtained from centers in Seattle tests with 90 men, who have undergone intra vas device implantation, are going well. They are more likely to be successful and thus become a step forward in male contraception field. Hopefully, but without any guarantees, intra vas device will become an alternative to vasectomy procedure.
