Cancer is a serious disease that affects millions of people all over the world. In some countries it is the main mortality cause. And we still have insufficient data about cancer. That is why systematic researches in this domain are so important. There are a lot of cancer research institutes in many countries. They are joining together a great number of scientists, researchers, and clinicians, in order to make efficient collaborations that will give the best possible results.
The funding of cancer research institutes comes from diverse sources, including government, charity, sponsors, and others. One of the most influent scientific networks in the field is Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research (LICR). It was founded in 1971 by the American businessman Daniel K. Ludwig. LICR has nine Braches in seven countries, and many Affiliates all over the world. Lately LICR has expanded its activities in countries with strong scientific potential, but little opportunity for cancer research and international collaborations in this domain.
These countries include Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, China, and more. Comparing to other cancer research institutes, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research has some specific particularities. While most of institutes are establishing three-years projects, effectuated basically in laboratory, LICR encourages broad scale and long-term initiatives. Most of cancer research projects are limited to laboratory research.
They do not have the possibility to test their discoveries' efficiency at the clinical level. This happens because of lack of funding, limited time (usually three years), and so on. The principal of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research is that any study or project must be effectuated entirely, from the first level, in laboratory, to the upper level, in clinic.
That is why they encourage and establish long-term studies, with thorough clinical trials, in order to fully test their new discoveries. Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research is the biggest international non-profit organization committed to cancer research. Another important cancer research institute in the UK is the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI).
It is an affiliation between Britannic Government, charitable organizations and private sectors. The main purpose of this institute is to bring together the most important and influent organizations that are funding cancer research in the UK. Through a strong collaboration and cooperation, and elaborating strategic planning at national level, they plan to intensively increase the efficiency of national cancer research projects.
NCRI has created a Cancer Research Database that encloses information on all cancer research projects financed by NCRI members. Local and international cancer research institutes and organizations are making serious efforts to speed up the rate of progress in the cancer research domain, increasing the efficiency and utility of their projects.
