Instructional designers models, the ADDIE model

Added: 03/03/2006

There are many instructional designers' models from which the ADDIE model is the most widely adopted model. Thought there are other models being used as well such as the Dick and Carey model. These models are needed in order to create and project any instructional designs but they can be applied to other fields such as programming.

By rights, the ADDIE model is considered to be the most universal instructional designer model. It is widely used by instructional designers and training developers. The ADDIE model stands for five sequence states of the instructional design: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. This guideline is very flexible for building efficient training and performance support tools. The ADDIE model is a commonly use approach and can be applied to almost every situation. Let's view the ADDIE model in particular.

The first phase stands for the analysis and at this stage an instructional designer should analyze the learning characteristics like the task that needs to be done and much more. The second phase involves the design and at this stage it is necessary to develop learning objectives and to choose an instructional approach. The third phase involves development and at this stage it is necessary to create instructional or training materials. The fourth stage involves implementation and at this stage in which it is necessary to deliver or to distribute the instructional materials. And the last phase is to evaluate by making sure the materials achieved the desired purposes. It is necessary to state that most of the current instructional designers models follow the ADDIE model in many respects. The Dick and Carey model and the Kemp model are widespread but are private outcomes of the ADDIE model. For example, the Dick and Carey model isn't as universal as the ADDIE model bust also allows for rapid prototyping. No matter what, the ADDIE model as the most universal model aims at saving time and money by catching problems while they are still easy to fix.

The Dick and Carey model is also one of the most widely adopted instructional designers models. It is named after the main theorists Dick and Lou Carey. Here are the key elements of the Dick and Carey model. First, of all it is necessary to determine the instructional purpose. The second step is to analyze the instructional purpose which is the step by step determination of what designers are doing to achieve the goal. The next step is to analyze learners and contexts, contexts in which the skill will be learned and the contexts in which the skills will be used. Then, it is necessary to write performance objectives that are specific behavior skills to be learned, the conditions under which they will be performed, and the criteria for a successful performance.

The ADIE model and the Dick and Carey models are great because the can be used in schools and in offices. Unlike the Kemp and other instructional designers models of years past that was good but not great. These instructional designers models were created by the well known psychologist B. F. Skinner because he wished to measure every psychological aspect of human beings. Fort example, the instructional designer's models measure the physical aspects of a person, that is the psychomotor in psychological terminology, the cognitive aspects which involves learning and the affective aspects of a person which involves someone's feelings and motivations. These instructional designer's models are great for society.
