Dental problems often mean a dental crowns necessity

Added: 11/02/2005

With any dental problem it is better to go to a dentist immediately. In most cases doctor will find a dental crowns necessity. Dental crowns are usually used for weak tooth protection and dental bridge holding, which are the mostly wide-spread problems causing toothaches and dental discomfort. There exist dental crowns of different kinds depending on the material they are made of.

Dental crowns necessity may appear at any time. It is always better to go to a dentist to get a qualified help immediately, because every hour of delay may cause sharp toothaches and more costly treatment. Dentist help is needed when even a little trouble with teeth appears. A doctor will decide whether it is a dental crowns necessity, and if needed, will put a dental crown.

Dental crown is a cap, which is placed over a tooth and is shaped like it. Dental crowns necessity emerges when there is a need of weak tooth protection. In this case a dental crown helps to put together parts of a tooth, if it is cracked, or protect damaged tooth from further destruction. Dental crowns are also used for broken tooth restoring, covering the teeth, which are significantly discolored or misshaped, dental bridge holding, etc.

There are various kinds of dental crowns. Their prices usually depend on the material which they are made of. In their practice dentists use metal crowns, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, ceramic or porcelain crowns, and resin crowns. There are also permanent and temporary dental crowns.

Metal crowns are among the most firm and reliable. The metals used for production of dental crowns are gold, which is the most popular, palladium, nickel or chromium. These metals are very strong and invulnerable to many external factors and can hardly be broken. Metal crowns serve for a long time and are not likely to wear off quickly. The disadvantage of metal dental crowns making them not so popular is their esthetics. They are of the color of metal they made of and do not look like natural teeth. However metal crowns are very good for back teeth which are always out of sight.

Contrary to metal ones, porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns look like normal teeth and their color can be selected specially to suit the color of teeth. Still porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are not so reliable and can be broken relatively easily. They wear off in a shorter time than metal crowns.

Resin crowns are the least expensive among the other kinds of dental crowns. But the low price is accompanied with low quality, thus the crowns of this kind are the most likely not to serve long and cause the new dental crowns necessity.

The most popular and the most reliable kind of dental crowns are ceramic or porcelain crowns. They are made of the materials, which can look like natural teeth and their color can be selected among the thousands of shades to suit the colors of surrounding teeth. The material is firm and hard to break or damage. However, ceramic and porcelain crowns are the most expensive.

Dental crowns necessity may be caused by many factors and each of them is worth visiting a dentist. He or she will first examine a damage tooth and make a mould of it in order to send it to the dental laboratory, where dental crowns are produced. A patient will wear the temporary crown until permanent crown is made. After two or three weeks dentist will put the permanent crown instead of the temporary.

Usually crowns serve from 5 to 15 years.
