The process of hair growing is rather regular. About 10% of all hair that is on the scalp is in the phase of resting. Every 2-3 months the hair falls out giving an opportunity to new hair grow in the place. The growing phase usually lasts for about 2-6 years. Every hair grows approximately one centimeter a month. Hair loss causes can be quite different. It is quite possible to lose a large amount of hair after a surgery or an illness. It is related to stress which is caused by the illness or the surgery. The condition is temporary. Hormonal problems can also be treated as hair loss causes. If a person has a thyroid gland which is either underactive or overactive he may have excessive hair loss. It is possible to cure the problem of hair loss by treating the thyroid disease. Hair loss can also be provoked by the imbalance in female and male hormones called estrogens and androgens. So, the hair loss can be stopped by correcting hormone imbalance. Women hair loss can be caused by a pregnancy. Traditionally, women suffer excessive hair loss about 3 months after they give birth to a child. And it is not fortuitous because it can be also related to the change in hormones. When a woman is pregnant her body produces large amounts of hormones that maintain the growth of the hair which normally would fall out. After the childbirth the hormones return to their normal level, the hair falls out and the normal hair growth resumes. It is necessary to be very careful with medicines because some of them can cause hair loss. The problem disappears after the person stops taking the medicine. While speaking about the medicines that may cause hair loss, it is necessary to mention anticoagulants (or blood thinners), those medicines that are used for chemotherapy to treat cancer, antidepressants, medicines used for treating gout, birth control pills and large amounts of vitamin A. There are some infections that may cause the loss of hair. Hair loss in children can be provoked by fungal infections that occur on the scalp. Antifungal medicines are a rather good treatment for various infections. As well, it is important to remember the fact that such underlying diseases as diabetes and lupus can be the cause of hair loss. It is of a paramount importance to detect hair loss which can be the first sign of these serious diseases. The sign will help to find the cause which should be treated promptly and effectively. Improper hair care can lead to hair loss. Traction alopecia is a condition which may be caused by the excess pulling of the hair while making different types of hair-do. It is possible to restart the normal growth of hair if the pulling is stopped before scars on the scalp appear. If not stopped, it can entail permanent hair loss. If a person decides to have permanents (or perms), which involve the use of chemicals and hot oil treatments, swelling or inflammation of hair follicles may occur.
