 Hair grafting as variety of hair transplantation

There are two types of hair transplantation. One of them is called hair grafting. It replaces individual hair or groups of hair to bald areas. Another method uses hair flaps bearing skin. The procedure of hair grafting can cover bald areas with the help of either large or small plugs. Grafting session is performed quicker if it applies large hair plugs. As for the advantage of small plugs, they look more natural.
Hair grafting is the procedure used for those who have a problem of hair loss. It presupposes scalping from the areas where the hair is rather thick and transplanting it to the bald areas. The grafts retain the character of donor sites. There are two types of grafts. They are individual plugs and strip grafts.
Hair grafting using strip grafts applies long hair strips that bear hair. They are aimed at providing even thick coverage in the front part of the scalp. This is popular with younger men. It is rather common to combine strip grafts with individual plugs.
As for the hair grafting using individual plugs, it is mainly aimed at filling areas that already possess a hairline produced by strips or flaps. Individual plugs in their turn can be of two types according to their size. The first type is called as large grafts which are about 3 to 5 mm across. They also contain hair follicles. The second type is small grafts that are 1 to 2 mm across containing only some hair follicles.
Large hair plugs are punch grafts. Thanks to their size they allow for a quick grafting session thus filling bald areas. Traditionally, it is necessary to hold about 3-4 sessions of 50 plugs to attain the result desired. One of the variants of punch hair grafting is square grafting which is able to provide a smoother line thanks to its straight edge.
Small grafts can also be called micro and mini grafts. One of their most important advantages is that they look rather natural due to their small size. However, they need a lot of sessions with hundreds of grafts that are inserted at every session.
The general hair grafting description tells that it is better to establish the hair line a bit higher than lower. It can be explained by the fact that it is easier to correct a high hairline and almost impossible to correct the one which is low.
Some surgeons recommend a certain kind of treatment used for reducing the amount of hair loss during the procedure of hair grafting. This treatment includes the use of minoxidil.
It is interesting to know that the patients with curly hair usually have better results than those with straight hair. Better results are also achieved by people possessing blond, salt and pepper hair.
The procedure of hair grafting is considered to be ineffective in black patients. The follicles of these people have spiral shape that makes them vulnerable to damage. Moreover, their hair pattern is less dense. It is also necessary to consider the risk of keloid formation.
Traditionally, the procedure of hair transplantation is performed to replace hair with men and more rarely with women. It can recreate the hair pattern of the patient but it is necessary to remember that the new hair pattern may be different from the hair that had been in place before it got thin.
The surgery can be performed in several ways. Grafting is a method replacing groups of hair or individual hairs. Another method uses hair flaps that bear skin. This type of operation is performed either under local or general anesthesia. It is the patient who chooses the type of anesthesia.
