Genioplasty is also referred to as chin augmentation. The procedure can be performed using different methods, the choice of which depends on the wishes of the patient, on the judgment and advice of the surgeon. Chin osteotomy is used when it is necessary to reduce the chin size. The patient can decide whether he wants the procedure to be made under the general or “twilight” anesthesia. The decision is usually made after the patient consults the surgeon and the anaesthesiologist.
Traditionally, chin augmentation is used to refer to genioplasty. Microgenia is a condition that defines a poorly developed chin. So, geniolplasty is the treatment for the condition.
Harmony of the face features is what can make a face attractive. There are people, whose facial proportions are in disharmony, and a small chin only contributes to the disproportion. It happens very often that a patient is dissatisfied with his “small chin” and feels embarrassed about it. It happens so that the facial disharmony is noticed by the plastic surgeon during a consultation for some other purpose. It happens often at the consultations devoted to nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty. Very often people who want to have smaller noses possess recessed chins. It is quite possible to improve the appearance of a nose and of a face on the whole with the help of genioplasty. Other patients can have opposite problems. Their chins are too prominent and thus require shortening.
There are a lot of methods used for chin projection. The technique depends on a number of factors. They are the aims of the patient, the judgment and addressing of the surgeon. First of all, the surgeon carries out a comprehensive evaluation during private consultation. The discussion between the surgeon and the patient before the operation is of paramount importance.
Very often, surgeons use chin implants to achieve the desirable results. The implants may be quite different. They may vary in sizes, shapes and the materials which are approved by FDA. This allows finding an individual approach to every client. The incision necessary for the surgery can be made either in the mouth or under the chin, traditionally hidden in a skin crease.
Genioplasty is a procedure, which is usually performed in adults of different ages.
In order to make a chin smaller surgeons use chin osteotomy.
Often, local anesthesia is not enough for patients undergoing sliding genioplasty. That is why the surgery is often performed under general anesthesia. But it is necessary to mention the fact that it is the patient who chooses whether to undergo the procedure with or without general anesthesia. Usually this choice is made after the patient has a consultation with his anaesthesiologist and surgeon. Some patients choose general anesthesia, while others opt for the so-called “twilight” anesthesia, which is administered during a surgery.
After the procedure is complete, a bandage is placed around the chin and the jaw. The bandage is left for about one week after the operation. During this time it is possible to define whether there is any necessity of wearing the bandage for longer. Non-absorbable sutures, if any, are removed during 5-7 days after the operation.
As a rule patients take a week off from work or studies and after that return to their normal activities. Surgeons advise that the patients should avoid strenuous activities for 2-3 weeks after the surgery.
Some patients feel postoperative pain while some don`t. If there is any pain the surgeon prescribes pain medications to reduce it.
