Important facts regarding fungal nail infections treatment

Added: 12/14/2005

About 50% of all nail disorders are caused by fungi infections that's why they have become rather common nowadays. About 18% of people worldwide have fungal nail infections. Fungal nail infections treatment should be carried out properly because untreated infections may easily spread to other uninfected nails. One of the most well-known treatment method is antifungal medications.

Fungal nail infections often come as a consequence of athlete's foot. They are caused by a small microorganism called fungi, which is likely to grow faster in moist areas (such as those around the toes). As a result, tight and moist shoes where there's not enough air can contribute to fungal nail infections. The fungi spores begin to grow either on or under the nail.

Speaking about fungal nail infections treatment, it's necessary to pay proper attention to the disease's typical symptoms. First the person may notice small yellow or white spot under the nail tip; later infected nails may become discolored, spotted, streaked and thickened. They can break easily and even have crumbly appearance as the fungal infection progresses. In case when the nail separates from skin the doctor can recommend nail removal, because no fungal nail infections treatment may help.

It is very important to form a correct diagnosis of nail infections, because fungal nail infections treatment can be rather expensive and long-term. The diagnosis can be made via investigation of the nail clippings where fungi spores can be seen under the microscope. There are two well-known ways for fungal nail infections diagnosis: "KOH" (rather quickly performed) and "Fungal culture" test (it may take approximately a month to recover, but is considered to be pretty efficient).

It's worth admitting that not every discolored or thickened nail means having fungal nail infections. There's a range of other skin diseases possible to cause the mentioned symptoms, for example psoriasis, lichen planus or eczema.

Fungal nail infections treatment depends on the disease severity, type of infection and amount of nail involved. Usually it can take a while to cure. That's why it is recommended to begin treating nails on the early stages of fungal illness (before it has managed to spread deeper into the nail). If you have noticed any changes in your nail's appearance, any pain or swelling - you should visit the doctor right away. As a rule, fungal nail infections treatment appears to be difficult. However, medical experts keep on designing new therapies for healing nails.

Fungal nail infections treatment can last from 3 months to one or more years. Treatment is more justifiable if the nail is in growing or painful, particularly if you are diabetic.

One of the most widely-used methods of treatment is special antifungal medications, prescribed by the doctor. Unfortunately they have a number of side effects, but still are rather efficient and as a result - expensive. They are able to stop the fungal infection from causing constant damage to the nail and increase a chance of cure. Thanks to the mentioned medications the patients have also a chance of shortening the time for treatment.

Milder fungal nail infections are known to be treated by application of creams and topical medications. However, they are not always able to heal the damaged nail. But still these treatments are better than doing nothing. Because health is an integral part of our living. We should take care of it.
