Added: 02/18/2006

Pregnancy is a very important period in the woman's life. It affects the entire health of the woman and makes her body transform to correspond to all the baby's requirements. First childbirth stage is one of the most important stages of labor. According to the common medical practice there are three stages making up the first childbirth stage. The article will pay attention to each and every of them.

It is necessary to pay appropriate attention to the issue of pregnancy and describe all the stages of childbirth (or labor). According to various reliable sources of information and according to the common medical childbirth stages review, there are three main stages of labor: the first childbirth stage (which has three sub-stages), second one and third one. Let us look through every of the mentioned first childbirth stage and discover the peculiarities of first stage signs. As it has already been mentioned the first childbirth stage is usually divided into three certain sub-stages: early labor, active labor and transition. Every more or less educated person should know that during the early labor stage the cervix becomes thinner and opens up for approximately three centimeters. It is worthy admitting that vaginal mucus may appear to be blood tinged and woman is likely to experience some discomfort and contractions which are sill supposed to be not very strong and more than five minutes apart. Even during such contractions the woman is likely to be able to stay active. But the contractions can be rather painful (depending on the general health of the pregnant woman). As it has been mentioned in the recent first stage review, women should pay attention to the following tips to cope with condition they have during this birth stage. So, they include eating whatever the woman likes (primarily easily-digested foods such as jam, honey, toast, gelatin, broth and various crackers), using different relaxation techniques, taking bath or shower to relax and resting while labor is not demanding. Speaking about the second sub-stage of the first childbirth stage, it is necessary to admit that it is characterized by longer, stronger contractions which are often less then five minutes apart. Be aware the woman is usually unable to talk during such contractions. Take into consideration the following tips to cope with the active labor stage: remember to urinate every hour or two, use various coping techniques, including positioning, relaxation, showers, massage, vocalization or pain medications (in severe cases), drink juice in quantities for energy, move around as much as possible. It is worthy admitting that during this birth stage the woman is likely to need a labor support person who will stay with her all the time and help her. During the transition, the third part of the first birth stage, the cervix is known to be dilated from about seven to ten centimeters and woman will experience strong and long contractions with time in between; backaches, despair, vomiting, trembling, feeling hot and cold, legs shaking are also rather common for the majority of women during this stage of childbirth. For this reason it is pretty important that the woman's labor support person should provide emotional and physical all the necessary support required by the pregnant woman. In conclusion, it should be noted that transition usually lasts for a couple of minutes or even to few hours. If the woman has already had a vaginal delivery the transition period is likely to be faster.
