One of the European grands couturiers, Pierre Cardin was born in 1922, in Venice Italy to French parents. After World War two ended, he moved to Paris. In Paris France Pierre Cardin studied architecture and worked with famous French sculptors such as Paquin. However, soon Pierre discovered his flair for fashion design and started to work with Elsa Schiaparelli. This collaboration continued until Pierre Cardin became the head of Christian Dior's tailleure atelier in 1947.
In 1950, Pierre Cardin decided to develop his own house and started with Haute couture three years later in 1953. One of the European grands couturiers, Pierre Cardin is very well known for his avant-garde designs and his space age styles. The main line in his designs is geometric shapes and motives without taking into account how the female form should look. Pierre Cardin is also known for his contribution in to the unisex design. Sometimes experimental these designs are not really practical, but the influence on contemporary fashion was great. Pierre Cardin was the first European designer to discover Japan as a high fashion market where he started his production in 1959.
That same year Pierre Cardin was withdrawn from the Chambre Syndicale for introducing a ready to wear collection for the Printemps department stores. In 1971, Pierre Cardin Started to show his collection in the venue he bought, the Espace Cardin in Paris. It was formerly a theater near the American Embassy. At the same time it was often a place to reveal new artistic talents and musicians as Pierre Cardin is a great admirer of the theatre. By the way, sometimes, he holds theater festivals in the castle of Vaucluse that he bought.
One of the European grands couturiers, Gianni Versace was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, in 1946. He was an outstanding fashion designer and owned the high end Versace clothing company until he died in 1997. Gianni Versace was born into ma family with a tailor and since his childhood he has enjoyed designing and making his own clothes.
In 1972, Versace's first significant success came when he was hired by a clothing company to create a collection. In 1974, he began to make and design clothes bearing his brand name. Four years Gianni Versace opened his first boutique.
In 1985, Versace's collection was a hit of the sales and many celebrities came to purchase his entire collections. Gianni Versace became the personal designer for celebrities like Bon Jovi, Courtney Love, and Elton John. He is particularly known for his clothes made of leather and furs because they were innovative but he had been always blamed for that by animal rights advocacy organizations. In 1992, Gianni Versace moved to Miami Florida where he purchased a mansion at 1116 Ocean Drive for a million dollars. In 1997, Versace was shot to death by Andrew Cunanan while he was on a spree killing and it was a shock for the Versace house. However, his sister Donatella Versace soon came to run his business. Donatella and Gianni Versace remain one of the best European grands couturiers.
