Ear surgery (also known as otoplasty) is a common surgery performed to correct particular types of hearing loss. One of other otoplasty purposes is treating diseases, injuries or deformations of the ear's auditory tube, including both middle and inner ear, auditory and vestibular systems as well. Ear surgery can be performed on both children and adults. In certain cases, ear surgery is considered to be the only treatment.
Ear surgery (or otoplasty) is a microsurgery which is performed with special microscope to provide the surgeon with an opportunity to view the very small ear structure. The use of minimally invasive laser surgery is also coming into practice (particularly for middle ear procedures). The mentioned laser surgery is considered to be a better procedure as it is able to reduce the amount of trauma (due to vibration), enhance coagulation and provides the surgeon with access to hard to reach places in the middle ear.
Speaking about the ear surgery it`s necessary to mention there are several types of this surgery. For example, these are the common ear surgery types known in the modern medical practice: tympanoplasty, myringotomy, stapedectomy and ear tube surgery. Among the less common ear surgery types are ear surgery performed to repair a perforated eardrum, cochlear implants, and tumor removal.
As a matter of fact, ear surgery, as a rule, takes about two or three hours. However, certain complicated procedures may take even longer. The performed technique usually depends on the particular problem.
Who are otoplasty candidates? According to statistics, one of the otoplasty purposes is shaping prominent ears back closer to the person`s head or reducing the size of large ears. So, in the majority of cases, ear surgery is done on children between four and fourteen years of age. It`s a common knowledge that ears are almost fully grown by the age of four. That`s why the earlier ear surgery is performed the better. In this event, it will save the person from much teasing and ridicule.
Some adults also may require ear surgery. As a rule, there are no additional risks associated with the surgery. Any way, the person should be informed about all the peculiarities, risks and possible complications of the ear surgery. It`s worthy mentioning that for the better balance the surgery is often performed on both ears. It`s no wonder that after the surgery the person might have a little faint scar in the back of the ear. However, it`s not a big problem as this scar usually heals with time.
Speaking about the ear surgery recovery, it`s necessary to admit that both children and adults are, as a rule, allowed to go back to the routine in a few hours after the surgery. Nevertheless, many of them prefer to stay overnight in the clinics (or at hospital) until the general anesthesia effects wear off. The patient`s head after the ear surgery is wrapped in a special bulky bandage to promote the proper healing and molding. Unfortunately, the ears often itch or ache for a couple of days. However, such a condition can easily be relieved with particular painkillers.
The bulky bandages on the patients head are replaced within the several days after the ear surgery. This procedure is performed by a lighter head dressing (which is similar to the headband). It is absolutely nececssary to wear the mentioned dressing. Be aware that`s it is rather important for the patient to follow all the instructions and advice given by the surgeon.
