Laparoscopy surgery and specialized laparoscopic equipment review

Added: 10/14/2005

This article covers the following aspects: the development and formation of laparoscopic surgery, the essential pieces of specialized laparoscopic equipment and the information on forefront laparoscopic equipment manufacturers. The common benefits of laparoscopic surgery approach will be highlighted as well.

Laparoscopic surgery is a special kind of surgery that uses telescopes to inspect the inside of the human body. During the operation, this scope is inserted in a body through the small incisions and a tiny camera transmits the video data to a special television screen next to the operating table. Then surgical instruments can be introduced into the body through the additional incisions making it possible to perform all necessary procedures such as cutting, retracting, stitching and stapling.

The following can be attributed to the undeniable benefits of laparoscopic surgerythat include a reduced level of scarring, earlier and smoother recoveries for patients, and eventually, shorter periods of stay in hospital. Some of the most widespread conditions that are currently treated with the use of laparoscopic surgery are gall stones, appendicitis, bowel disorders, hernias, etc.

A large number of medical experts believe that laparoscopy is certainly a product of medical engineering. And they are completely right. But the development and formation of lapascopy has not gone very smooth in reality. In fact, laparoscopy was originally criticized for the high costs of laparoscopic equipment and potential complications due to sharp long instruments and difficult hand eye co-ordination.

Minimal access surgery has evolved swiftly only after huge success of laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In our time it is impossible to slow down the speed of minimal access surgery development, and every day new types of operations are added on its list. Present-day laparoscopy is 100% technologically dependent surgery and before starting surgery every surgeon must have perfect knowledge of every piece of specialized laparoscopic equipment.

Another very essential part of specialized laparoscopy equipment is light. The laparoscopic surgery which belongs to the surgery with the minimal access to the body totally depends on the artificial light. Before the light cable and light source were discovered, surgeons had to do with special mirrors reflecting the light onto where the sufficient light access was missing. Fibre optic cable was invented in 1954. This valuable invention led to a big breakthrough in the technology. Nowadays, two types of cables are used as specialized laparoscopic equipment: liquid crystal gel cables and optic cables.

The quality of the image transmitted to the video monitor unit during the laparoscopic operation greatly depends on how well the essential elements are lighted. The light source is all-important piece of specialized laparoscopic equipment. A typical light source consists of a lamp, condensing lens, heat filter, and intensity control circuit.

These were the most essential elements of laparoscopic gear. The full set of the specialized laparoscopic equipment is quite long. Here are some of the other tools used in laparoscopic surgery: laproflator (a general-purpose insufflation unit), suction irrigation machine, Veress needle, trocar and canulla, etc.

Among laparoscopic equipment makers are: Richard Wolf, Olympus, Karl Storz, Siemens, Inlet Medical Inc, Ethicon Endosurgery, and others.
