Dental Specialties are More Than Just Orthodontics and Pedodontics

Added: 01/03/2006

Tooth care is a very important part of the total health care because tooth problems not only cause severe pains but also esthetic problems. Dental care is certainly an everyday procedure which must be taken by everyone at home. However, it is very useful to visit doctor from time to time and take professional care with the use of different medical dental specialties. Here is some information on dental specialties. They include orthodontics and pedodontics. Orthodontics is an area of corrective dentistry that deals with straightening teeth and correcting irregular bites.

One of the dental specialties is orthodontics. Orthodontists accomplish this through the use of corrective appliances, including orthodontic braces and retainers. There are two phases of orthodontic treatment, the active phase and the retention phase. The active phase of orthodontics typically involves the use of braces to move the teeth into their new position and the retention phase involves the use of a retainer to keep the teeth in place. Orthodontics usually involves using braces for teeth alignment.

Orthodontists utilize braces to move the teeth by applying continuous pressure in the desired direction(s). This pressure is adjusted many times over the course of orthodontic treatment, which can last anywhere from one to three years, and sometimes longer. Braces consist of brackets, which are applied to the teeth with a bonding agent, and arch wires, which are threaded through the brackets and act as a track to guide the teeth to their new position.

Braces can be stainless steel, plastic, or ceramic - stainless steel is the most common, but plastic or ceramic can be chosen for cosmetic reasons. The cost of orthodontics varies depending on the type of braces used and the length of treatment, but generally ranges between $1,800.00 and $5,500.00.

A retainer is an orthodontic appliance made of plastic and stainless steel wire that is used to hold the teeth in place after a patient's braces have been removed. The retainer keeps the teeth in their new position while the surrounding bone and gums adjust around them. The length of time that the retainer must be worn will vary, but most orthodontists advise teenagers to wear their retainers until their early 20s.

Here is a little bit of information on other dental specialties. This kind of dental specialties is called pedodontics. All the dental specialties are very important. But this is the most important one.

Almost all adult people have the approximate understanding about what the children's dentistry is. Often it is based on the own children's, as a rule, negative experience and is reduced to one phrase: "The children's dentistry is a sealing small cavities in the small teeth of the small patients". It is a very narrow point of view; it is considered by experts only as one of aspects of the children's dentistry and refers to pedodontics.

The dentistry of the children's age considers features of the children's organism in the displays of pathology of the teeth. The children?s dentistry diseases proceed differently than the adults` diseases. Thus the children's dentist considers interrelation with the general diseases, processes of growth and development of the child. So, the pedodontics is directly connected with pediatrics.

Parents should care of the healthy teeth of the kid even before its birth. The chronic centers of an infection in an oral cavity of the pregnant woman can cause a decrease in the body?s immunity system, and it influences the processes of an antenatal mineralization of the primary teeth and formations of rudiments of the constant teeth.

At the disposal of modern pedodontics there are a lot of techniques allowing quickly and without serious consequences to do diagnostics and treatment. The best method of preventive maintenance of dental diseases is a prophylactic medical examination of the children that includes visiting the dentist twice a year.
