Added: 12/09/2005

Nicotine is one of the main killers in the world. It is one of 400 different poisonous substances contained in cigarette smoke. Among the numerous damaging nicotine use consequences are such serious diseases as cancer and coronary heart disease, not to mention emphysema and other respiratory problems related to smoking. So, smokers do not only risk their lives, but the nicotine use consequences of "second hand" smoke can have a damaging affect on those who happen to be near individuals who do smoke.

Much is known about horrible nicotine use consequences. However, scientists and doctors worry about the growing tendency of spreading the above mentioned bad habit, as there are a lot of people considering the nicotine use consequences less seriously than it should be.

Nicotine is the reason of 75% of deaths resulting from lung cancer. Nicotine ingested with tobacco smoke toxins destroys human cells producing their mutations. If a person goes on with smoking these mutations may lead to an uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. So, the more cigarettes you smoke a day, the longer you smoke, the more nicotine you inhale, the higher risk of lung cancer you get.

Many people tend to think that only lung cancers may be the result of nicotine use. But the disease also may develop in those organs which contact cigarette smoke and these can be other cancers like cancer of oral cavity and throat cancer. Toxins from lungs penetrate into blood circulating of the whole body which can cause gullet cancers, cancers of esophagus, cancers of gallbladder, rectal cancers and others.

In addition to this, nicotine addiction affects the human brain. Seven seconds after inhaling nicotine penetrates into the brain. It sort of improves the connection between brain cells facilitating the transferring of nerve impulses. For a moment, nicotine provokes brain processes but then they get slower. In other words, changing their usual way of intellectual activity smokers are faced with harmful feedback of nicotine.

Very often nicotine addicts feel pain in their hearts. It is caused by the spasm of coronary vessels. When a smoker inhales his/her lungs are full of nicotine. After that it gets into blood. The blood pressure goes up, as well as heartbeat and heart volume. As a result the work of the heart gets harder. Human blood is enriched with oxygen. But the oxygen in the blood of someone who smokes is replaced with carbon dioxide which makes the content of the blood worse and may cause atherosclerosis.

Nicotine makes the heart beat faster and heart muscle gets older much earlier than it is supposed to. To sum it up, we can state that nicotine is one of the main reasons of coronary heart disease and nicotine addicts have a high risk of heart attack and different changes damaging cardio-vascular system.

There is some more clinical nicotine use consequences science knows about. For instance, a smoking pregnant woman risks delivering a dead baby or an underweighted baby. With those who overuse nicotine there are much more cases of stomach ulcer and duodenal ulcer. Moreover, the degree of lethal outcome is higher with smokers than with non-smokers.

Skin damage is among those negative nicotine use consequences which affect the body no matter how old you are and how long you spend in the sun. Nicotine makes skin look wrinkly and dry even among young people. Also, nicotine smokers often may cough and experience a shortness of breath. Their mouths, hands, hair, clothes are soaked with tobacco smell. And finally, ever kiss a woman who smokes? It really IS like licking an ashtray.

Many of those smokers who started with one cigarette a day can easily notice that they become nicotine addicted quickly enough to be a heavy smoker. That is why the most glorious victory over nicotine and yourself is not to start smoking at all.
