As the latest studies show, dentistry is pretty old. Even in ancient Egypt different techniques to treat dental problems were used. Granted they were really, really painful, but Egyptian dentists at least gave dentistry a try. Archeological discoveries show detailed descriptions of these techniques in old papyruses. So, the history of dentistry can be dated back to 3000 BC. Of course, all the instruments were primitive at those times but still different treatment methods were already used.
But almost until the 20th century there was no such profession as dentist. In most cases all the dentistry operations were performed by general physicians or barbers. And the range of used techniques and methods was also not so wide. The most usual way to solve dental problems was tooth extraction.
So, the most common dental equipment used by barbers back then was oriented on this simple procedure. For example, a special instrument invented in the 14th (it was called a ?pelican?) was used until the 19th century. And only in the middle of the 20th this main part of common dental equipment was replaced with forceps.
And still today there are many people who are interested in these instruments. Collecting of historical surgery and dental instruments is a usual hobby among doctors. But in fact this hobby can also be a wonderful investment because some dental instruments sets can cost a lot. On the internet you can even find special web sites dedicated to collection of historical medical equipment.
Of course, modern common dental equipment is much more advanced than it was before. There are many different instruments that allow solving almost any dental problem. And of course besides common dental equipment there are many different systems that make work of the dentist much easier. For example, special intraoral cameras and magnifiers give an opportunity to perform detailed inspection of teeth and find defects that cannot be seen.
There are also many different achievements in the sector of materials that are used in dentistry these days. They allow making very strong realistic looking dental implants. The technique of these dental implants is not that complex actually but it has to be performed carefully. In most cases such implant consists of a titanium screw and crown made of ceramic material placed on it. All the operations can only be made by professionals otherwise such implants can cause serious problems with health.
Dental care also has many improvements. The number of ways to prevent different dental problems is huge these days. All sorts of special toothpastes and toothbrushes are offered by numerous manufacturers in the sector of personal care. There are even all sorts of electric toothbrushes that can be more effective than regular toothbrushes. But professional care is also necessary. You should visit a dentist regularly and most dentists recommend cleaning your teeth professionally every six months.
All these measures will allow you to avoid dental problems like cavities. And of course if any problem occurs you should visit a dentist as soon as possible because time becomes very important.
