Genital reconstructive, or intersex, surgery was discovered by an urologist H. H. and other surgeons at John Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, US) and other significant medical centers somewhere between 1930 and 1960. In those times medical understanding of general intersex conditions was somewhat primitive, initially based on identifying the gonad type by surgery or by mere palpation. Rearing and sex of assignment were then determined usually by the look of the external genitalia, but to determine the type of gonads on an infant patient was quite difficult. Most of the intersex patients at John Hopkins center were grown up and sought the doctor's help for they had genital function problems.
