If you knew you would one day get lung cancer would you have started smoking in the first place? Lung cancer, like most other cancers, can be of different kinds, and it influences the way of treatment chosen by doctor in each particular patient. Cancers that start in the lungs are divided into two major types, non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer, depending on how the cells look under a microscope. Each lung cancer type originates and spreads in different ways and is treated differently.

Ninety per cent of lung cancer diagnosis is connected with smoking. The risk of lung cancer is 30 times greater in habitual smokers than in non-smokers and correlates with the total exposure to cigarettes, referred to as pack-years. One in seven people who smoke at least two packs a day will die of lung cancer. Cigar and pipe smoke double the risk of developing lung cancer, compared to nonsmokers. Exposure to air pollution, radiation and industrial chemicals, such as arsenic, nickel and asbestos also intensify the risk of lung cancer symptoms. Asbestos alone increases by four times the risk of getting the malady. The mixture of asbestos and smoking increase the risk 90 times.
