Classification of Recent Organ Transplant Developments

Added: 03/01/2006

If you could save someone's life by donating an organ would you? Could you? The history of transplantations is rather long and recent organ transplant developments are the results of long and complicated searches and practice of such operations. The result is the development of such kinds of transplant operations as steroid-free immuno-suppression and paired-donor exchange. Recent organ transplant developments have made a great progress in modern medicine and gave thousands of people the opportunity to safe their lives.

Operations connected with transplantations of different organs and tissues are considered today to be almost the most difficult and serious ones as a great amount of various factors can influence the operation as well as the state of the patients after it. Transplantation is the process of replacement of some organ, blood tissue from one part of the body to another or from one person to another. The sources of transplantations are live and dead donors. Conditions of these different kinds of operations are rather different.

In case of live donors they can take place in the process of transplantation when is alive and can do it even for several times as it is rather frequently done by volunteers in the sphere of transplantations. In the case of dead donors operation can be done only after their death as the organ or tissue that is to be used for transplantation is irreplaceable and is obvious for normal processes of human body. Some people also become volunteers and allow using their organs for transplants even after their death.

During the last period of time we are able to notice different kinds of recent organ transplant developments and it is absolutely natural as the practice of transplantations has a rather long history and is developing even nowadays and maybe even more quick and effective. Among recent organ transplant developments we can name such ones as steroid-free immunosuppression and paired-donor exchange. They have become real discoveries and cause small revolution in the sphere of transplantation operations. Now it is high time to tell about general history of transplantations as recent organ transplant developments obviously have their roots and were caused by different inventions and discoveries that took place in the earlier periods of history.

Well, the first attempts of transplantations were made really long time ago. Let us take for example the case with Chinese surgeon who exchanged two hearts between two men in order to produce one strong and clever man. Later one Roman Catholic tried to transplant a leg. The number of such ancient operations is great and also a big number of them was not fixed and noted anywhere so that nowadays we have no possibility to know anything about them.

Later the sphere of transplantations was developing further and further. For example, in 1905 Australian doctor Eduard Zirm was the first to practice effective and successful human corneal transplantation. Well, it is visible that the history of organ transplantations is rather long and includes different kinds of various cases and situations. A great amount of different organs, tissues were transplanted. Among them we can name kidneys, blood, skin, bowel, lungs, and liver.

Among organs transplanted in the process of recent organ transplant developments we can also remember about knees, trachea, and larynx. In the process of transplantations practice development surgeons did not stop on exchanges of organs between animals and between people apart. There were also cases of transplants between animals and people and vice versa.

In general it can be said that the process of practice in such operations never stops and the number of such operations conducted during the recent period of time has grown greatly. More and more people tend to address to transplantations as very often they are the only way to cope with the situation and rescue the life of the patient. Transplantation operations are rather complicated and only well-educated doctors are allowed to conduct them. One of the biggest problems is not the operation itself but avoiding different infections and their development after the operation as in many cases that was the reason of death and complications after the operations.
