Even though the first movies that appeared in the beginning of the century were nothing like their contemporary counterparts, they were silent. Nevertheless silent movie actresses and actors were able to gain an instant popularity.

Silent films were a hit even before the invention and introduction of sound, but historians indicate that approximately 80-90% of them have been lost for ever. Silent films showings were usually featured with live music, which played up the emphasis of facial expression and body language of actors. Modern silent movie actors became popular in the beginning of the 20th century. Very few of them made the transition from silent films to talking pictures. The most outstanding among them are Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
