Modern screenwriters are the authors who write different screenplays from which television programs and movies are made. The majority of professional screenwriters are unionized and represented by different organizations, for example the Writers Guild of America. Among the most notable and well-known screenwriters are Kevin Smith and David Lynch, who have made a considerable contribution into the modern screenwriting.

There are two trains-of-thought regarding classic screenwriters and classic and modern movies. Some critics hold the opinion that there are no modern or classic movies, because each film is a product of its own time, in effect every movie when it was produced was modern. Other critics say that a film's ensuing popularity will put in the category of classic. Francis Ford Coppola has had an equal share of hits and misses. Fortunately, his hits - the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now have more than weathered the passage of time and are now considered "classics".
