Hitchcock was a by-product of Hollywood's "old school". A completely hands-on megalomaniac that controlled every aspect of his films. The movies we watch today certainly aren't the same ones that our fathers and grandfathers watched. This is the age of the block buster film. Each film that opens needs to be an event. Any domestic gross less than 4100 million dollars usually labels a film as a failure. Modern directors are those that know how to play the game - making films that generate big profits while maintaining some sense of personal integrity. Enter Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino. Two of today's modern directors whose approaches to film making are quite opposed, but who manage to generate the same results.
