Cancer Stage Grouping - a Better Understanding of the Four Stages of Cancer

Added: 02/08/2006

The human body consists of millions of cells, every one of whom has its own functions. For example, skin cells form protection on the body. Normal cells grow, divide and die in definite regularity. The body controls these processes. In the cases when the structure of cell division changes because of different factors, they begin to divide without control and they lose the ability to recognize their cells and structures and become the cancerous cells. The cancerous cells form tumors and can move into different organs and matters where they break their functions. So, there is a notion of "the cancer stage grouping". It means that there are some stages of the cancer.

Almost all the tumors develop in a normal fashion and more often in those matters and organs in which the cell division speed is higher (for example, in the skin, bones and so on). The cancerous cells differ from the normal cells by that fact that they don't die. Instead of it they continue to grow and to divide and to form new cancerous cells. The cancerous cells usually produce toxic matters which make create harm to human health, create a lack of appetite and induce weight loss.

Many reasons and factors are known which cause the cancer development. About eighty per cent of them can be prevented. Here one should tell about the cancer stage grouping. The cancer is a process consisting of many stages. It is known that it takes five to ten years for tumor development to the size till two centimeters. So, most tumors begin to form between the ages of 25 and 40. And in some rare cases - even in early childhood.

The cancer staging is the definition of the stage (that is the level of the tumor development in the human organism). The cancer stage grouping is a very important step in the definition of the treatment method and allows predicting the results of the therapy.

There are some cancer stage groupings. The TNM staging system is more often used. In according to the system there are some important facts. They are:

- The tumor size and its development to the next located matters and organs

- Connection with the lymphatic vessels

- Absence or presence of metastasis

There are four cancer stages - Stage I, Stage II, Stage III, and Stage IV. In general, the less the cancer condition that is the more widespread process. One should add more details about the cancer stage grouping.

- The characteristic features of Stage I - small size of the tumor, usually to two centimeters, the absence of the metastases. It is an early cancer stage. Usually it is treated if it is noticed in time.

- The characteristic features of Stage II - the size of the tumor is more than two centimeters, metastasis appears.

- The characteristic features of Stage III - the tumor size is very big and there is presence of metastases.

- The characteristic features of Stage IV - the tumor size is big, the tumor is unmovable and it is impossible to cut it out from the organ or from the body in general.

There are risk factors and they influence cancer development. The risk factors are everything which makes the possibility of the cancer appearance. The basic factors are connected with the environment. Some factors are the human habits. For example, smoking, drinking alcohol, the character of the taking food, and the sun influence. But if a person has any risk factor it doesn't mean that the cancer will appear in his body.

Thus, the overall stage grouping consists of four cancer stages. The first stage is the earliest one and it is easy and quickly treated. The fourth stage is the hardest. Usually in this case it is late to do something. There are many risk factors. So, it is very important to notice the cancer in time in order to begin treatment.
