Breast Cancer Risk Factors Prove That No One is Immune

Added: 02/06/2006

You can eat right, go to the gym, don't abuse you body - but even that isn't a guarantee. You can be famous, well-liked. Doesn't mean a thing. Look at Sheryl Crow - known the world over, more money than she knows what to do with, and BOOM! Diagnosed with breast cancer. Dozens of organizations engaged in the problem of breast cancer appear round the world every day. Still, there's very little information about the breast cancer risk factors. Age and gene factors are the ones which may be called the most important. It is necessary for the women, independently from their race orientation, age factor to know about the phenomena which may be a real threat to their lives. Scientists and doctors of the US, as well as of other countries, work on the problem to help women watch their health.

Breast cancer has recently been called the "most popular" disease of everyday life. Medics and scientists say that the disease affects each race differently. With the purpose to get to know more about this question caused an urgent necessity to provide a special research on the basis of looking for the breast cancer risk factors. The last studies of breast cancer risk factors by American researchers show the differences between the African-American women and white women in the USA.

In general, the risk of the disease is similar in both groups of women; still there are some factors that affect each race differently. African-American women are more likely to die from the cancer, just as well as white women are more likely to get the disease. The most important and recognizable factors are obesity, age factor, menopause and whether the cancer is likely for the family.

During the researches, 400,000 white women and 21,000 African-American women took part in the experiment. The researches started in 1982, and the scientists have been watching their lives during 20 years. Before the experiment, all the women were asked about the history of their family diseases to figure out if there is a family factor of danger for them. The results were the following: in both races breast cancer risk factors were mostly the same (like being overweight, etc.).

At the same time, there was the same positive effect in both race groups like from doing physical exercises and so on. Still there were much more differences that depend on the level of gene factor. The researches cannot be called as perfect ones as it was completely impossible to watch every single change in the lives of those women. Such factors as losing or gaining weight also could have a certain influence on the experiment.

There are two groups of breast cancer risk factors: the first one is modifiable, and here women can control the danger to get the disease. This group of factors includes physical activity and obesity. And it is important that for both African-American and white women. The second group of factors is the one where, unfortunately, women cannot change anything. Here stands the age factor, which is dangerous for both race groups of women. The researches showed that the part of African-American women who died from breast cancer were equal to the number of those white women who took part in the experiment.

In general, the breast cancer risk factors are similar between two race groups of women. Scientists say that this kind of experiment does not have the proper effect for the ways of curing the breast cancer; it only gives brief information which is, certainly, not enough. It would be much better and, what is more - would have a greater effect - if such an experiment was organized among smaller ethnic groups. That would give wider amount of information for the scientists to understand and find out the reasons of getting the disease.

Anyway, each woman should watch the condition of her health beginning from the early age to avoid problems in older age, as it is much easier to foresee the problem on the early stage than try to solve the problem when it is too late, no matter how much money we have. Especially now, when the operations and the medicines are so expensive, and far not each woman can afford costly medical treatment and buying medications which are now also very expensive.
